I agree with George. If you're going to be here for 9 months, then get your paperwork in for your Resident CHP and you'll have it within 45 days. Then you know you're covered for the next 7 and a half months or however long you end up staying. Then, when you leave Virginia, file for a non-resident permit to cover you during your travels (if travel will include through Virginia, anyway).
Refer to the following link for specific information and a link to the CHP application form.

Re: VA CHP question
Thanks George. I want to do everything according to the law. Concerning reciprocity as I understood (but will have to look again) VA accepts FL's non-resident permit as do many other states. I have not read anything about travelers only, so I will have to look into that more. Thanks again and I welcome more comments.gfost1 wrote: That said, my opinion is that the pitfalls of doing it wrong are not worth the risk. If you want to carry in VA while a resident or domiciliary, get the VA resident permit. Non-resident permits and reciprocity agreements are made to protect travelers.
Re: VA CHP question
Ok, I was leaning toward the non-resident FL permit. Now, some people say that the reciprocity agreements are more for travelers and not state residents.
My ?:
Couldn't I move to VA (and even be a VA resident) and own only a non-resident FL permit and be covered by the law?
Thanks everyone for your help!
