Maybe I'm a little slow this morning (been known to happen before), is it the fact that you can make a private transaction without any gubmint interference that you find crazy?

Looks like its Sunday or nothing. Scheduled it on Yom Kippur (Friday sunset through sunset Saturday). Of course, I've been to it the past 3 times in 7-8 months, so I know the layout of the place and dealer pretty by heart. Only thing I need is a nice padded/travel rifle case for my Ruger 10-22 and more (relatively cheap) .30 carbine ammunition. I'll probably take a pass this time.

I have not sold any of my guns yet, but I understand one thing we can do is get an FFL involved. Its still a private sale, but by taking the firearm to a LGS and paying for them to run a check on the buyer should set the seller's mind at ease that it is all perfectly legal, the LGS provides the proper paperwork and everybody's happy. Has anyone out there done it this way? What was your experience? And if you don't use a LGS as a go beween, would you sell to a stranger in a parking lot?

Depends... Many if not most folks will take a card, but some charge an additional fee for doing so (usually about 3%). Never seen anyone refuse cash.

Nope, in VA a background check is not required for a private transaction. From what I understand, that is not the case in some other states.

NOVA - Personally, I would have no problems selling to a stranger in a parking lot or anywhere else. As long as they give me no reason to believe that they may be ineligible to possess a firearm, and their cash is green, it's all good.

It has been shown time and again that the background checks are not infallible. Once you understand that the machine that performs the check was built by humans, and humans read and interpret the results, you understand that mistakes can and do happen. Mistakes happen in both varieties, eligible purchasers are denied and have to submit proof of their eligibility, and ineligible purchasers are approved.

Once a FFL gets involved it is no longer a private sale. The FFL has to log the firearm into his books from the seller, and log it out to the buyer once they have passed the background check and filled out the 4473/SP-65. It's basically a consignment sale from the perspective of the licensee, so he's going to want a cut unless he likes you (and then he'll probably just charge his usual transfer fee).

I would never sell one of my guns to a perfect stranger, that's just me. That's freedom as well.

I've sold 2 rifles and a pistol to other VA residents before. I checked ID to make sure they are VA residents and I was lucky enough that all the buyers had concealed carry permits -- helped put my mind at ease that they at least passed that background check. If you do a private sale I strongly recommend having the buyer sign a bill of sale as proof that the firearm was sold.

Why? I can print them out all day long and have my friends sign them. It's not going to stop a determined LEO from getting a search warrant and wrecking your house looking for guns.

Anybody pick up anything yet? I was going to go last night but decided not too...Guns have a bad habit of following me home.
That's something I can't afford with a USC/UMP conversion in the works and a SPR on order!
