6 days left, called Ms. Shipp, the clerk and spoke to her. She told me that she had just sent two large batches to the Judge, and was waiting on them. She also told me that she would likely be taking care of a bunch of them today. All in all, she was very helpful and I think I should have my permit pretty soon.

How much information did you give the Chief Justice's office. I wonder if Ms. Shipp received a call.

I had to threaten to call them to get my CHP renewal straight. Didn't have to actually make the call though.

Patience, as they say, is a virtue.

If the 45 days are not yet up, you have no beef. I would not bother calling the court clerk - they will see that as pestering, if the deadline has not yet elapsed.

Wait a week and then see what's what.

Loudoun's are also signed by the Clerk, not a judge.

All right, now for the less-than-thrilling conclusion of my legal adventure.

As of today, 27 SEPT 2011, I am in possesion of a 90-day certified temporary CHP. Apparently, there are technical issues with their printing systems, and getting the CHP to print out. So, Ms. Shipp agreed to issue me a temporary permit, signed and certified by herself, which will act as my permit until such time as they can get my actual permit printed. So, I am now a concealed carrier in Cville!

I bit my tongue and didn't say anything.

On both of my visits I only saw the same two women in the office.

As to looking for my name on the civil docket, I couldn't find it when I was waiting and I just checked again and there are still no hits on my name.

Here's what I posted in another thread when I got it:
Back to the subject of the original post of this thread.
I have an update.
As of 3:45 pm 8/4/11 I am a card carrying VA Covert Handgun Carrier! :shades:
Last Thursday, 7/28/11, was my 45th day waiting. So Friday I called the Albemarle County Circuit Court Clerk and ask what the status was on my application. I was told that it wasn't ready and they would call me. I mentioned a temporary permit and the lady told me I could use my receipt for the application until my permit showed up.
This Wednesday they left a message on voice mail that my CHP was ready to be picked up. HMMMMM.
So yesterday afternoon I drove into town and picked it up. I asked the clerk that gave it to me why it was dated July 14, 2011. Where had it been for three weeks? She told me that they had to get it from the sheriff's office. WTH????
Is this typical for Albemarle county?
OBTW, my permit is signed by DEBRA M. SHIPP, CLERK

Are permits from other counties actually signed by a judge?
Alan I noticed nobody answered your question regarding whether the clerk could sign the CHP. The answer is yes. The law was changed this past GA (General Assembly) session if I recall correctly to allow for the clerk to issue the CHP withough judicial review where the background check is completely clean and there is nothing that may get into situations where the issuing of the CHP becomes "may issue" (such as if you have multiple misdemeanors in a set period of time).

Well you sure are right fireman. No offense was intended. I read the first sentence of your post this morning, but apparently missed the remainder. Oh well, now we've got him covered twice.

No offense was taken. and I realy didn't mean to totaly direct at you, sorry. It's just that some tend to jump in before reading all the posts and then post something as new information that had been posted days earlier, and then carry on as if they know the whole discussion.
And I was having a bad day at work Sorry :friends:

I must respectfully disagree. They are obligated to know the law, as it affects their job. Otherwise, they will "make them up" every day, simply in ignorance if not by intent.

My wife and I applied for our CHP on February 13th with a very friendly woman at the Clerk's office. Although waiting our 4-6 weeks, folks at the local gun shop (Woodbrook) congratulated us, and told us that in there experience the permits are routinely issued by Albemarle County exactly on the 43rd day. Interesting that they standardize the time-out here is Charlottesville.

select your county from the drop-down and on the next page, select 'civil' and search on your name. you might be able to get a status on your app that way.

hth.
It is also worth mentioning that a CHP is $15 in Greene and $50 in ALB. Now why that is you wondrin'? Because VA state law sets the max fee at $50 and ALB hates you and your outdated freedoms!

Yes, the office was very helpful. They suggested that I wait out the 45 day period, then if I have not been issued my permit, to meet with the Clerk herself directly. They said that if (For whatever reason) I run into trouble obtaining either my permit, or temporary permit, then I should not hesitate to contact them again so they could help me.

I got my renewal in Goochland Co., they charged me the $50 dollars. I think it depends on the courts' budget, more than anything else. IMHO

curious... does goochland require fingerprints for the initial permit application?

I think they do, I just got the renewal so I just filled out the form, signed it in front of the clerk and paid my money.

Here is a good story about CHP. I went about 4 months ago to the clerks office and questioned about it. being a military vet and currently in the national guard i asked about having the dd214 and having my weapons qualication from the navy which is 2 pages long cause i was a gunners mate so i was qualified on everything and my quals from the guard, m4 and 9mm. the lady told me that it wasnt enough and i had to take a class. hmmmmm..... is it common for local laws to trump state laws? being on the state police web site i had several of the quals that they listed as being able to get my CHP? including the hunters safty course. short version i made a big deal about it but took the class anyhow. i felt as if i didnt haft too . guys in my unit have gotten theirs with just a military id and nothing more.
