A non-1911 toy, believe it or not.

Post by dorminWS »

A while back, I heard about the SlideFire stock. Asked my pet FFL guy about it, and he apparently wound up in protracted negotiations to become a dealer/distributor, during which time I forgot about my inquiry. Yesterday I got an e-mail that I could come on up and pick up my Slidefire stock. When I got there, it occurred to me that I just didn't really want to alter my factory-mint condition Colt AR-15 with this gimmick, no matter how cool it might be, and I mentioned that. Ever ready to help by parting me from cash, my bud promptly showed me the Smith & Wesson MP-15, which he had for something like $672. So I bought it. #1 Son promptly volunteered to install the Slidefire, and also reminded me that I'd bankrolled the purchase of a 100-round double-drum AR mag some months back. That turned out to be a downright serendipitous acquisition. So here I've pictured the S&W MP-15 showing the Slidefire stock and also with the big mag installed. Gonna run some rounds through it this evening if the rain lets up enough. Guess the next thing I need to watch for is a good deal on some .223, huh?

RANGE REPORT:

Sneaked out yesterday evening just before dusk to try out the new toy. Works well enough; although you have to get the hang of it. You can actually aim it and hit stuff. Don't think the fire rate is as fast as a true auto weapon of AR design, but it's probably as fast as the WWII stuff I've seen/heard; and it's a dangsight faster than you can squeeze off rounds on semi-auto. Slide stock works a little better with a straight 30-round mag than the 100-round drum, because the drums sort of stick out where your weak arm is sliding the gun away from the stock and you must "reach around". 100-round drum tended to fail to feed last round, so the spring may not be quite strong enough. And your weak arm tends to fatigue because of the unatural/unaccustomed work of pulling the gun away from you.

BUT IT'S STILL A HOOT! Second-best toy I ever played with. Feller couldn't have that much fun for $1,200 bucks or so at that Moonlight Bunny Ranch place they have on HBO sometimes - - at least not and come out of the experience with a gun to show for it. ($350 or so for the stock, $672 or so for the gun, and $220 for the 100-round mag)

It got pretty hot after a couple hundred rounds went through it. (I'm back to talking about the .223 now) But LAWSEY, it was fun! The S&W lacks a forward assist, but I didn't need one for the 600 rounds or so I burned. Only significant drawback was the one we all knew about from the get-go: it's seductive, but hard to feed.

I think everybody ought to have one.

Sounds like you need the Surefire 100 round mag, not that drum, for this stock. They also make a 60 round mag.

Dang good idea, but the whole world seems to be out of stock on those.
