Most online retailers will want you to make arrangements with a local FFL dealer prior to your purchase. You might want to contact the online company first and give them your zip code so they can tell you who they have dealt with in the past. If they already have a copy of the local dealer's license on file, then you're ready to order.
The gun will ship to the local dealer, then you will pay them a transfer fee plus $2 for the background check. Don't forget to contact the local dealer and let them know what is being shipped to them.
Don't forget to ask the local dealer how much they charge for the transfer fee. A typical fee is between $25 - $35.

Just remember to use your local FFL's address as the "ship to" address.

I am not so sure on this, or it may depend on certain places. Some sites I have seen explicitly tell you to use your address and then have the FFL fax their address/license with your order # to them. Then they'll ship the firearm to the FFL dealer, who will contact you.rod wrote:Just remember to use your local FFL's address as the "ship to" address.
Most sites will have a FAQ or a how-to guide on ordering a firearm online from them. Some want you to get the FFL to fax prior to the order, others afterwards with the order # attached with the FFL license, etc. Best to search the site or contact them just to be sure. Over all though it seems pretty painless to do. Hopefully I'll get to test this theory out in the next two weeks

There are a bunch of ways sellers do it, but try to make sure they know what gun you're paying for and what FFL it's going to.
It would be really helpful if you can get them to specify that the gun they're sending is for you (and also who it's from). Getting a gun in that has no indication of who sent it or who it's supposed to go to is not a lot of fun.

Re: How to purchase firearms from online?
My first rule of thumb: buy locally and support our local businesses!
Since I think you're in NOVA, you're going to use probably a FFL like VA Arms or NOVA Armament. Each place has different procedures so it's best to figure out which FFL you're going to use and find out how they process transfers. NoVA armamanet has an online form while VA Arms prefers an email.
My point: check with the FFL!
good luck!
