Getting my CHP
I am a Michigan resident and am moving to Fredericksburg Virginia and am wondering how I should go about getting my CHP. I know I should become a VA Resident. How long is the wait time in Fredericksburg? Where do I go to get it?

Re: Getting my CHP
Step 1 - You need some sort of training class. CHP class, hunter safety, etc. There are tons of options. However, I highly recommend taking an actual classroom based CHP instruction. A good instructor will help you learn a lot about Virginia's laws.
Step 2 - Take the evidence of successful course completion to the local courthouse. You will fill out the paperwork, get a background check, and get fingerprinted as part of the background check.
Step 3 - Wait. They are allowed 45 days to process and mail you your permit. If you don't have it within 45 days then the court clerk should send you a certified copy of your application. This can serve as a concealed permit for 90 days.

Re: Getting my CHP
just to clarify a bit...
- you should go to the circuit court clerk's office for the county or city where you reside.
- you can get the chp application off of the state police web site, but some clerk's offices will have on-hand.
- not all jurisdictions fingerprint. it's at the circuit/city's discretion.
- not sure if they mail the chp. greene county clerk told me they'd call and then i could pick up.

Re: Getting my CHP
I don't think fringerprint is a requirement when applying for a CHP in VA. Some localities may require it for initial application so check your court clerk; it is not required when renewing your CHP.

i took Jim's "Basic" class last month and really enjoyed it. i will likely also take his "Concealed Carry" class next time it is offered.

Clarke County requires fingerprints. They do it in the county sheriff's office by appointment and by walk-in on Mondays. I'm getting printed next week! Woohoo!
