I never really got into to "Sons of Guns" just seemed fake to me. "Private Contractors" looking for an M16 that's remote controlled or a rocket firework system to scare of pirates just seemed made up for tv.

Let's face one fact...

The daughter (Stephanie) gets on my nerves.

AND!

She's "hittin' it" with Kris. You can just TELL! Will may KNOW, but he's doesn't "KNOW"!

The American Chopper episodes were already shown during American Chopper. SOG had Paul Jr do some custom work on a gun for them and paint job. It turned out awesome. Then they gave Mikey from AC a shotgun (Saiga of course).

Can you explain what you mean with this? Just want to hear your reasoning for that statement.

I haven't seen the show, but I did read an interesting article about it in American Rifleman. Here's a link:

Its a family show in every essence of the words. Its not faked and the contractors have purchased a lot more weaponry than the show is allowed to show. Will does awesome things for fellow vets and who cares who's hitting who? For the sake of an armory, his is pretty up to date.

Mixed emotions - on the balance, good.
I dont care for the bits that I think have been produced strictly for the TV wow factor, like the fake explosions caused by gunfire (sorry, even twin AR's in full auto wont cause a paper target to explode, and a .50 cal won't cause a small house to explode). I do like the gunsmithing sections - only wish they would discuss more about the mechanics and science of firearms.
And, I read that they will discuss more regarding the weapons they show and how you cannot simply walk in and buy a dozen full auto AK's and a shotgun with a 6 inch barrel. After all, we don't want Achmed the terrorist or the soccer moms to think it's that easy.

Two reasons, really. One is that it's a joke. It's "laugh at these dumb rednecks" - the Red Jacket crew is the immediate butt of the joke, but the whole gun community is ultimately the target. Remember always that the media hates and fears us, and wants to make us look as bad as possible.

Second, this is the first and probably only exposure to the gun industry for most of the people who watch the show. Sure, it's pretty much all staged, but the average viewer doesn't know that. So they come away with the impression that everyone, on both sides of the counter, is a jackass and/or dipshit with some screws loose. Which is how the average person thinks of motorcycle custom shops and pawnbrokers now. Not that it's hours of diligence and paperwork and trying not to break the law. That's not sexy, funny or dangerous, and it doesn't play into the "look at these irresponsible idiots" narrative so it never sees the screen.

I won't even get into the whole "them dudes on teevee done built a automatic machine-gun, so I kin too!" situation.

I'll agree with that, but also got a couple of things to point out. Will auditioned his shop to be in the show. From a business stand point, he made the right move. Because now he got more exposure and is selling more of his guns. His best selling guns are the internally suppressed AK and his supressed saiga 12. During 2 episode last season, it was mentioned about all the paperwork and wait time to actually get the guns in hand. His daughter Stephanie told one guy about it and Will mentioned it to someone. He has also stated that in this season he will explain more of the process dealing with the paperwork, etc. Because as you talk about, the average viewer don't know that and he has been having too many people just wanting to walk in and buy the guns.

It seems like the guy knows a lot about random guns. It would be nice to see more historical and technical stuff, but then again I'm a gun guy not a reality show geek. My only criticism is that I don't want to see another double, triple, or quad something. Just build a sweet gun. :tommygun:

I work in the industry. Nothing on TV reality or not is real. Everything is scripted and gone over quite a few times to get it "Just Right" for TV. Kinda takes the reality out of reality TV...

Son's of Guns is entertaining though. The Pirate thing had me scratching my head too..lol :tommygun:

That's interesting. I know a guy who sells for one of the big distributors and calls on that area of the country. He claims Redjacket actually sends most of it's fabrication work out to a nearby business that's a REAL gunsmithing operation.

Lol, most of the people on "reality" shows can't act worth a damn. It didn't take me very long to figure out that folks were just reading a script. Therefore, I watch fiction that is advertised as fiction; at least the acting is more believable....

The industry I am talking about was film/video production, not gun-smithing.. Just to be clear.

While I'm sure Sons of Guns is fake, for some reason the show is entertaining to me. I like American Chopper too, so I guess I just like that kind of shows.

I can't hardly stand to watch it, as someone already said, "It seems staged."
