A sign of the times??
Is it my imagination or was the 4th of July barely celebrated? In my neighboorheood there were no decorations,no barbecues, NO fireworks, their is usually a bunch of stuff going on,,Hell midnight last night was mouse quiet and it usually sounds like a war zone with the fireworks and "extras" going off... People just don't have the money and the country seems lifeless,. It is a shame that our independence day was barely a blip in the radar,, Was the rest of the state like this?

When we were coming home from gathering with friends last night, my wife made the same observation. Shouldn't really be surprised though, the majority of Americans showed their disdain for freedom last November.

You should have been over in Kempsville last night. It sounded like Saturday night in Baghdad

I noticed the same thing VB. I usually go out on my back porch about 9pm every 4th just to watch everything around the hood. Just a couple of pops off in the distance...NOTHING nearby.
Kinda sad.
Kinda sad.

We took the boat to a fireworks display on the Potomac River last night. It was a great display - there were a lot of people on the beach and probably about 150 boats on the water with us.

Sounds like that here on most weekends.OakRidgeStars wrote:You should have been over in Kempsville last night. It sounded like Saturday night in Baghdad

Here too. The difference is that last night it was rednecks with fireworks, other nights it's rednecks with guns.Vahunter wrote:Sounds like that here on most weekends.OakRidgeStars wrote:You should have been over in Kempsville last night. It sounded like Saturday night in Baghdad
And if anyone finds the term "redneck" offensive they can substitute "hick" or "hillbilly" or "appalachain american"
Re: A sign of the times??
I don't know, this year a couple neighbours decided to lite it up and we did a good job. Call me a redneck or what ever, but I've spent more time this year studing our fore fathers and what they did and what they gave up for us! I'm very humbled.

Re: A sign of the times??
My family had a decent 4th, went up to a great uncles house near Fredricksburg, Fort Valley area to be more exact, and he had gone into WV and brought back a bunch of mortars and things that go high and blow up....made for a good show. Then there was the whole riding around on ATVs and shooting bottle rockets off a little wooden rig on the back....got a bit hairy, and dangerous yes, but fun.
Re: A sign of the times??
We sat on the front porch and watched the fireworks display through the trees while I lit one half gross of bottle rockets 6 - 8 or so at a time with a benzine torch.

I live in Alexandria which is densely populated. There were a few that went off around here but not many. No B-B-Qs either. Our local Moose lodge put on a good one though.
No more catchy slogans for me...I am simply fed up...4...four...4...2+2...

I live in Brandermill in Midlothian, and we had the annual parade to Sunday Park, and the annual fire-works. I also had my US flag out during the day.

Howdy,
The celebration in my 'hood sounded pretty typical, but was dominated by pool parties from neighbors on both sides. 'round here (Hampton Roads) the gubmint actively discourages the use of incendiaries for individual displays of patriotism. Perhaps many of those who would normally ignore the nanny state are feeling a little intimidated. What if the names of local fireworks scofflaws get bucked up the ladder into the hands of BATFE or Homeland Security? CHP holders are are certain to be on the sh*tlist already, along with as many filers of form 4473 as they have been able to get their hands on since Nov'08.
Regards, George

Re: A sign of the times??
We had a 4th of July Parade, that my son was in, down mainstreet in Purcellville...place was done up in flags and they had a good display that evening at Franklin Park...My boy was the redneck,
He was riding in the back of a Southern States P/U Truck, cowboy hat on, John deere shirt that said "Got Dirt?" on it, and a American Flag in each hand.... made his pops proud...
and I tied in giving him his first .22, single shot, bolt action that was his grandfathers with July 4th and we had a long discussion about the US Consitution and why it is a privlidge to be an American...He wanted a rifle because his sister has one
Its hard to get to my house with out being identified, distanced, movement path projected, and some one calling out the current windage...please pay no never mind the white rocks at 50 ft. intervals...

Be particular, and be vigilant, as the enemy will only attack on two occasions:
When you're ready or when you're not ready.
Also never forget, that everyone who shows up, is not necessarily there to help.
