Parent arrested for brandishing gun at bus stop

Post by newdovo »

By Evrod Cassimy - WWBT NBC12.

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) – We have new information about a Chesterfield mom accused of brandishing a gun at her kid's bus stop this morning.... She was arrested for bringing a gun near kids waiting to catch the bus.

http://www.nbc12.com/story/14654332/parent-arrested

I think that this gal made a poor choice to open carry while confronting children at a bus stop, and may have done it with the intent to intimidate. But, from the info given in the articke, it says the gun was holstered. Not sure how that's brandishing. Did she break the law? Maybe she referenced the gun somehow during the event. Interested in hearing more info as the story develops.

As parent, I understand her frustration. Our daughter comes home crying about the kids at school. Just before Easter, she had several bruises on her arm and leg. The school gives us double talk and wont do anything.
Last week, the same kid beat up our daughter's friend.
They said they'll investigate.

One article says the Bus stop is school property? So was she at the school or on a public street,or private property.. Either way in all good consience the open carry in this situatuion was not the thing to do. Sadly it will get a ton of publicity ,and all negative, just because some jackass couldn't handle a situation involving kids like an adult. Depending on how much this gets blown out of proportion OCer's will probably be getting a few more unwelcome stares from an uninformed public.

I find it interesting you are denouncing someone who is exercising her right to own and carry a firearm. From the news report it says the gun was HOlSTERED. How was it brandished if it stayed holstered? Did she actually threaten to use it? Those details are missing. And until those details are provided I refuse to say she did wrong with her firearm. Could she have handled the situation differently, possibly. To those of you who say she should have taken the issue to the school administration, I respond with this. They will do NOTHING except MAYBE scold the bully and tell them they shouldn't do that. School Administrators are a bunch of idealist fools who think that everyone will love everyone else and no one can do no wrong.

For those who wonder where I base the above statements from, it is from personal experience. I was bullied in school to the point I dreaded every morning waking up and trudging my way there. I learned the first time it got physical when another student attacked me with a pair of scissors and I defended myself by restraining their hand and removing the scissor from the fight, that the School Administrators would do nothing for me. In fact when I told them what happened they tried to suspend me for defending myself. What happened to the other student absolutely nothing. So what did that teach me? I was wrong for defending myself? And we wonder why our country has become a bunch of pansies. The following times I was assaulted, I feared that I would be suspended or expelled for fighting. So what did I do, I took my licks and reported it to the school administrators and again they did nothing. I quickly learned that I was on my own. I took the opportunity that presented itself to me. The next bully that took a swing at me I put into the ground violently enough that it ended the fight. I never reported it to the school administrators and they never said a word to me. Word got around though of what I had done and I never had another issue again.
When I have kids I will tell them that if they start the fight, don't come looking to me for help. I will not tolerate bulling from my kids. If they are attacked though, I will back their actions 100% even if the school expels them. I will make sure they FULLY understand the possible repercussions of those actions. But they will not be punished by me. If they are attacked I will not bother with the school system. I will bring criminal and civil charges against the bully and the school for failure to provide a safe learning environment. I am tired of hearing of these gutless bullies getting away with anything they choose and the school systems doing NOTHING about it.

Unfortunately, this is not a new problem.
In 1975, I was a senior in high school in Roanoke.
During "Black History Week", the black students got mad because the administration would not let them have an assembly to recognize black history. Large groups of blacks began roaming the halls of the school attaching any lone white student they saw. A friend of mine was middle linebacker on our state championship football team and was jumped by 5 black students. He put 3 of them in the hospital. After being attached 5 on 1, my friend was charged with assault for defending himself. The case was later dismissed, but he should never have been charged in the first place.
THE HIGH PRICE OF FREEDOM IS A COST PAID BY A BRAVE FEW. In memory of our fallen heroes.

Without knowing more it's hard to say she did or didn't do wrong, but from what we know it probably was unwise. The American public education system is a failed social engineering experiment. It doesn't educate because it never was intended too.

What do you believe it was intended to do?

She apparently began to unholster it several times.

Maybe I've been doing this for so long that my memory is beginning to fade, but could someone remind how open carry helps the cause of gun rights?.

It's not about what I believe it was intended to do, but rather what the people who proposed it said it was intended to do. We've discussed this at length, but you can learn just about everything you want to on it by looking it up...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prussian_education_system
The Prussian education system was a system of mandatory education dating to the early 19th century. Parts of the Prussian education system have served as models for the education systems in a number of other countries, including Japan and the United States.

...

Seeking to replace the controlling functions of the local aristocracy, the Prussian court attempted to instill social obedience in the citizens through indoctrination. Every individual had to become convinced, in the core of his being, that the King was just, his decisions always right, and the need for obedience paramount.[citation needed]

The schools imposed an official language, to the prejudice of ethnic groups living in Prussia. The purpose of the system was to instill loyalty to the Crown and to train young men for the military and the bureaucracy. As the German philosopher Johann Gottlieb Fichte, a key influence on the system, said, "If you want to influence [the student] at all, you must do more than merely talk to him; you must fashion him, and fashion him in such a way that he simply cannot will otherwise than what you wish him to will." [1]

...

American educators were fascinated by German educational trends. In 1818, John Griscom gave a favorable report of Prussian education. English translations were made of French philosopher Victor Cousin's work, "Report on the State of Public Education in Prussia." Calvin E. Stowe, Henry Barnard, Horace Mann, George Bancroft and Joseph Cogswell all had a vigorous interest in German education. In 1843, Mann traveled to Germany to investigate how the educational process worked. Upon his return to the United States, he lobbied heavily to have the "Prussian model" adopted.

Mann convinced his fellow modernizers, especially those in the Whig Party to legislate tax-supported elementary public education in their states. Indeed, most northern states adopted one version or another of the system he established in Massachusetts...
If you really look into it that's the PC rendition of it.

Great post, Totes.

That even some here don't appreciate my exercise of my civil rights is something I could not care less about. You have much in common with those who said those "uppity negroes" should just pipe down and continue to sit at the back of the bus.

Freedom isn't won nor maintained without ruffling a few feathers and making some feel "uncomfortable." The very physical act of carrying a CCW or OC is uncomfortable. So what. It is a personal choice and I am not going to sit here and discourage anyone from exercising them.

If this person in the article "began to remove the gun from the holster" (which is not reflected in the article) then she committed a crime. Skateboarding may be a crime, but OC is not.

Interesting update, I recall 8 news interviewing a kid who claim she started to slip it out of the holster but she says she never even motioned to the gun. Here is the update: http://www.wric.com/global/Category.asp ... start=true

How is concealed carry helping the cause of gun rights? We can keep our freedoms as long as no one knows about it?

I personally open carry because I am a young woman and feel I have a greater chance of someone trying to mess with me then most men do. I want people to see that I am carrying because my thinking is the average criminal will see that I have a gun and go look for an easier target.

I think responsible OC helps more than CC does because it shows people that not everyone who carries a gun is a bad guy. I have nothing against those who CC but don't fool yourself into thinking you are helping the cause. You may not be harming the cause but you're not helping to improve it by keeping everyone around you ignorant.

Well armed women rule! I have helped several along that path, for the very reasons you expressed. I'm pretty handsome, but not all that. I still want to put out a real un-rapeable vibe.
