New in Norfolk/Portsmouth-Questions on Housing

Post by bensmiata »

I'm originally from DC, parents live in Annapolis, spent 4 years in New York at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Graduate in 1 month and already have a job set up in Portsmouth. Doing the reserve time in Norfolk at the base. Where should I look at living in Portsmouth or Norfolk? The office is in Portsmouth and I'm told you want to avoid the tunnels. I appreciate any help!

I live in Norfolk about 5 miles from the base. I hate Norfolk, but it was a tradeoff on traffic and time.

I would say Portsmouth if that is where you will be spending most of your time.

You can look in the Churchland section of Portsmouth or the Western Branch section of Chesapeake, which is only a couple of miles away.

I've lived in both areas and I would highly recommend Western Branch over Churchland. You will be close to Rt.17 and I-664, as well as the Western Freeway.

If I were you I would look for a place in Chesapeake, either in the Churchland or Greenbrier section. I have lived in the Hampton Roads are for over 20 years and Tunnell Traffic is something that you do not get used to it is something that you just learn to cope with.
