Range 82, Midland VA
Range 82, Midland VA
Went out there today for the weekly member orientation, facility is nice and looks promising if all goes well for the future. Currently the facility just has a 16 lane up to 100 yard outdoor facility, but from talking to them they hope to expand. They mainly handle gov't contracts during the day and sig sauer academy classes but during the afternoons they're open to members (not a bad deal to become a member, check the site for all the info.) I have not actually shot there yet so i cannot tell you any experience from that end, but so far so good. I will report more as I learn more, and for people that want more info check out www.range82.com

Re: Range 82, Midland VA
Looks like a nice place, within driving distance of a lot of people here on the forum. Thanks for the report. Looking forward to hearing more.
Re: Range 82, Midland VA
Will definately have to check them out, they're almost in my backyard.
Re: Range 82, Midland VA
if they're almost in your backyard, def check them out. hopefully when the word spreads more maybe the county will notice and lift some of the restrictions they have on the place.
Re: Range 82, Midland VA
Wow, that's not too far from my house. Be nice to have a 100 yard range. As I read it, my (shooting buddy) wife and I would each have to join and each have to have a separate lane (@ $32/hr.). Not to be cheap about it, but that could add up. However since the membership is minimal, it might be worth it. I'll check it out.

A few questions/observations come to mind looking through the web site:
- The yearly dues is pretty cheap, hourly fee is on par with the NRA range in Fairfax, but if no one else is waiting for your slot, I can see how the range fee will add up quickly.
- Must bring your own cardboard backing or buy backing there. Wonder what the cost is?
- I didnt see any mention of selling ammo there, so I assume no.
- The covered line looks like it will really reverb each shot, will probably bombard the shooters pretty bad. Good ear protection, maybe double up, might be a good idea.
- Range looks to be called hot/cease fire, like others in the area here (e.g. Clark Bros), so shooters can put up their targets, change targets, distances, etc. Problem with this is coordinating the cease fire for all shooters. One might be sitting for a while waiting for a CF to put up a new target, change distance, etc.
Still looks very interesting, will have to check it out this weekend.

You can either bring your own cardboard backing or purchase there, the range is called. From what i understand they do not sell ammo yet, they might possibly in the future but currently a lot of this is trial and error for them as they've never really run a recreational shooting range only government ranges. Its still such a small operation (i believe he quoted that he had around 18 members or so 20 now after me and another guy joined) but we'll see how it goes for this place.gregj wrote:A few questions/observations come to mind looking through the web site:

How does the range time work? IOW, do you pay when you're done? Do you know if they're planning on having any competitions there, like IDPA, etc?
It sounds like the range time would be a lot more relaxed, and more enjoyable. I always feel rushed at the NRA range.

Re: Range 82, Midland VA
yeah, but at the NRA range, you pay for an hour (in the air conditioning) and you can shoot as long as you want as long as there's no one waiting to take your spot on the firing line. i've stayed there for 3 hours before.
this place looks interesting, i really want to check it out. i bet its got clark brothers quaking in their boots. now there's shooting range competition, right in their back yard. this place is right near hugo's show hall where they used to hold the bealeton gunshows, just to give a frame of refrence for everyone.
so let me get this straight: you have to be an NRA member, then you have to pay $75 for the year, then $16 ontop of that per hour? or if you pay $75, is that like a yearly unlimited pass (similar to the membership that blue ridge offers, for unlimited time if you're a "member").
30 cal max rifle rounds. so 7.62 (7.62x51, 7.62x54r, 7.62x39) are OK, but anything bigger than that isn't allowed at the range.
the only huge problem i see is i could be sitting there ready tos hoot, paying for time, waiting for other shooters to finish up before going downrange to set up my target.

not sure how range time works as i have not actually shot there yet so i have no experience from that standpoint unfortunately, as far as competitions i did not ask about that but will ask next time i get down there and provide an answer if you dont figure one out before then anyways.gregj wrote:How does the range time work? Re: Range 82, Midland VA
Hello All,
I am one of the three partners that own and operate Range82 LLC. After reading some of the posts, I thought I might introduce myself and offer some insight. Range82 was started by guys with years of firearms experience with the thought of providing a membership based facility that was safe, clean, and and in a relaxed environment. I was tired of standing in mud, parking in a field, or having no restroom facilities. We have done our best to provide a good place to shoot and hone your skills. There is plenty of room to move with the range covered from the targets to the 35yrd line, with a covered 50 and 100. We currently do not sell ammo, so please bring your own. Our target prices are pretty cheap with a very reasonable membership fee. It is required that everyone is an NRA member due to liability purposes.
It took 5 yrs to get this business passed through the county and they are in a continuous process of trying to limit our business and viability, so it may be some time before we offer a large array of services like sales of ammo and a pro shop. You will have a good experience at our facility and we sure would appreciate your business. Please feel free to call or visit our website at range82.com. Your support and membership is greatly appreciated and please bear with us as we get going since we all have jobs and built, financed, run our operation out of our personal time and money to provide a great place to shoot.

Re: Range 82, Midland VA
Thanks, Mark. Just checked out the website and it looks like a very nice place. You can be sure that some of us here in NOVA will visit you soon as its hard to find a suitable place to shoot long guns.. Can you give us an idea of how busy the range is and if there is generally a wait time for a lane?
Thanks!
Thanks!
