What's the deal with .380 ammo?

Post by allingeneral »

I can't imagine that .380 is in any more demand than 9mm or .45ACP. So, why is it that there is NO .380 ammo ANYWHERE? There has to be a reason...

I was thinking the same thing the other day when considering a gun for my fiance. Only thing I can think of is that it must be a very popular carry caliber and for those that own something for self defense. Also, .380 is less popular with regular shooters so perhaps they make even less than other calibers like 9mm or .45. I've seen a similar phenomena with .38 (not quite as pronounced) though I found some on Cabelas the other day.

I'm thinking that .380 ammo has been manufactured in smaller quantities than other handgun calibers, but the demand for a lightweight carry gun has increased. Just good 'ol supply and demand again.

Don't know how much truth there is in it but I have heard that .380 and 9mm are assembled on the same machines. I guess there could be some truth to it, .380 is 9mmX17mm while 9mm is 9mmX19mm. .380 is out there, it's just difficult to locate. I ended up finding it in Florida while visiting family.

That's pretty much what I heard - they don't have to change out as many parts on the production lines since the diameter is the same. Seems to make sense...

Get it while it lasts! Prvi listed in stock right now...not a great price, but not highway robbery, either.

I've used gunbroker for primers and other really hard to find items and they do have some deals on .380. Jacob, please do elaborate!! I usually stop at wally worlds in out of the way places when I'm on the road. Sometimes you score big, but mostly empty shelves.

You can find some good deals at http://www.ammoengine.com as well. I've used it multiple times to find the best deals out there. Sometimes they'll do better than the best current deal on gunbroker.com.

I've quit using ammoengine. Most of the sites listed are Georgia Arms which has a long wait time. Some of the other sites listed have the ammo shown on back order. If I'm searching for ammo I start with Cabelas, Midway, Ammo to Go, and then Double Tap. If I haven't found it by then and I want it badly enough I use gun broker.

If you were planning the overthrow of a country whose majority of citizens were armed, the first thing you would do is dry up the ammunition supply.

I just took a look at ammoengine, first I've heard of it. I looked at the rounds I normally use, and it seemed to be in stock. Looks like I may start using AE first, rather than hitting each and every site.

I've noticed that ammoengine will lead you to a site that is out of stock. It also leans heavily towards Georgia Arms which has a 5-7 week ship time - read backorder...
