Inexpensive .308?

Post by davasmith »

Anyone have one? I can't seem to find one. I don't want a closet queen, and won't shoot a rust bucket all others fair game.

Bolt or semi-auto? Some definition of inexpensive would probably be useful. Just target practice and hunting or long range work?

Most definitely bolt. Target mainly, however the ability to reach out and touch something if needed. Price range differs greatly on platform basis, so simple accurate and less than 300.00
Any ideas? Josh

A Savage 110 is a good idea and not a bad weapon at all.

If you ever want to get into the long range game the 110 is a good gun in .308Win. However, make sure you get one (110 or otherwise) which has a 1:11.25 twist or faster. 1:12 can work, but is a little slow for 175 SMKs. A 110 FCP can shoot 1MOA at 1k with handloads and nothing else. Very impressive for a low cost gun. Also, the Savage accutrigger is vastly better than anything Remington sells...of course there are lots of nice after market triggers for 700s, but that is way out of your budget. You can save a bit of money now by splurging and getting the upgraded HS Precision/McMillian stock now rather than adding it later.

Overall the Savage 110 is the best low cost long range gun you are going to find IMHO. It also does very well as a hunting or shorter range rifle. IMHO the Savage 110 is better than a 700 in every way until you spend to get the PSS or milspec barrel version ($1k+). Even then, you need a trigger upgrade because the accutrigger is still better.

Of all the fairly expensive rifles I have owned... the one that put the most meat on the table and proved to be just as accurate is my old standby... 788 Remington .308 with the shorter barrel... 2x7 Redfield wideview... it came with a cheap beachwood stock, which I camouflaged with paint ... it has been my favorite. Just keep it clean and it keeps on tickin'... You can find them in most large gunshops... I think Dance's or Greentops probably got a few... around $300 and maybe less if you can find a private owner.. I highly recommend this weapon. It ain't real pretty and its pretty rough... but you can sharpen it up a bit with a different trigger but I left mine just like it was... It has never let me down.

I have a Savage 110, Garrett is absolutely correct regarding this gun. I love this gun! Very reliable, extremely accurate, easy to adjust the trigger pull. I would highly recommend this gun to anyone.

Clark Brothers has plenty of used hunting rifles. I should hope at least one of them is a .308.

No personal experience but Marlin XS7 or Savage Edge/Axis are said to be good shooters for around $300 new. 308 seems to be harder to find than other calibers for those models however.

I have seen the Savage Axis at Walmart for $267. There is one in stock at the Walmart in Roanoke, VA. Reviews look good for these. I plan on getting one in stainless for about $350.
