Bill, the whole problem is that your audience is by and large, civilians (non-.mil, non-LEO). If the article proclaims us "sheep" by default, then you can see why the members here would not feel as this is appropriate.
The members of VGOF, by the fact that they take an active and vociferous defense of their persons, their loved ones and perhaps even their neighbors are very much un-sheepish. Those who protested, did so because they are more akin to the sheepdogs, to the extent that the shepherd deigns to allow us to.
The article is good, but it is more for an audience of passive new-castrati, metrosexual, registered independant (but always votes D), self-identified moderates. We drink deep from the well of self sufficiency round mhea.

I was about to post this article... so I ran a search to see of it had been placed on this site... very glad to see it here.
Thanks for the post. I hope all the members read it and repeat it... it is basic, truthful and no BS... everyone is a member of one of these 3 groups.

+10 The sheep would be a lot safer if the sheepdogs and the shepherd weren't stripping the flock of their own teeth under the guise of "protecting them".Diomed wrote:I recoil from the whole "sheepdog" business, because the dogs work for the shepherd, who is conveniently left unmentioned (there has to be one, as dogs will not guard sheep in the wild - they will eat them just like the wolves do). I really think the introduction of the shepherd role makes quite a bit of sense and expounds upon what is really going on. Another representation that I feel is missing (and that nearly all of us on this board fit into) is the goat.
There are some differences between sheep and goats which I think are very illustrating metaphorically.
"A goat’s tail for most part stands up while a sheep’s hangs down." When I envision a tail hanging down, it makes me think of a dog showing submission to an alpha male or it's master. An erect tail portrays to me characteristics of confidence and alertness.
"Goats are curious by nature and are quite independent. A sheep on the other hand prefers to stay put in its flock." Goats are more self-reliant and sure of themselves while a sheep only feels protected while surrounded by other sheep. Sheep follow the crowd and don't ask questions. Goats make up their own minds and believe they know what is best for themselves.
Lastly I'd like to remind us all of this fact. A shepherd does not look after his flock because for love of sheep or for selfless reasons. A shepherd keeps his flock of sheep so he can profit from their wool.

This analogy has already been brought to light.NRB451 wrote:A shepherd keeps his flock of sheep so he can profit from their wool.
Consider that not all shepherds keep flocks for wool. Otherwise we would have no such thing as "Rack of Lamb" or "mutton".
In the case of wool, the shepherd will keep the sheep alive as long as it is useful and productive. In the other cases, well, use your imagination.

Re: Read it and learn, why I carry a weapon
I think some folks are trying to read too deep into this... IMHO, it is simply pointing out the reason a person with a CCW should carry and why those that don't should be classified into another group. It is a simplification of society, no deeper than that. Debating its content and attempting to get deep into it is useless. Read it and move on... if you like it fine, if not, that's fine too... but don't get lost in the semantics of the article...
It ain't that complicated and all these pseudo-intellects that are trying to dissect the content... well, it's just not that deep.
Course, I'm just an old truck driver, so maybe I haven't figured it out... I believe in the 'kiss' principle and the "it is, what it is, and it ain't no more."
It ain't that complicated and all these pseudo-intellects that are trying to dissect the content... well, it's just not that deep.

Re: Read it and learn, why I carry a weapon
What does a CCW (a CHP here in Virginia) have to do with the price of tea in China?
On the other topic, we are just trying to show how flawed the initial analogy is and how it presents a very idyllic perspective to the uninformed or unmotivated.

CCW or CHP... all the same, and I thought that was the subject matter of the original post, "Why I carry a weapon?" and I am not sure what tea is selling for in China.wylde007 wrote:What does a CCW (a CHP here in Virginia) have to do with the price of tea in China?

However, if you accept the commodity index (and it is a global market) it is about $3.52/kg. Just saying.

Was the original post specific to permitted carry?speezack wrote:CCW or CHP... all the same, and I thought that was the subject matter of the original post, "Why I carry a weapon?"
No. And that was my point.
Re: Read it and learn, why I carry a weapon
This country was founded by what Ben Franklin called "we the middling people"- you know, ordinary people, nothing special.
Its easy and fun to consider yourself a cool outsider than knows better than everyone else (the "sheeple"!), but, we're all just part of the flock. Some of us just think we're exceptions. None of us are. In the end we are all slaves to the same needs and desires, and worms dine just as happily on Presidents, Popes, and kings as they do on our most wretchedly poor.
On topic, I am awaiting my CCP, however the reasons I intend to carry a pistol is simply because better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

I say again: You can do that without a permit.
Re: Read it and learn, why I carry a weapon
Only in Vermont and possibly Arizona could I carry a concealed pistol without a permit.wylde007 wrote:I say again: You can do that without a permit.

Alaska allows CC without a permit too. But, I think the point is you don't need a permit to OPEN carry in VA. If memory serves, there are about 10 states that allow open carry without a permit.Kreutz wrote:Only in Vermont and possibly Arizona could I carry a concealed pistol without a permit.wylde007 wrote:I say again: You can do that without a permit.

"Open not concealed"... in plain English.
... and try walking downtown or around the Governors mansion with a pistol strapped to your waist, open, and see how far you get without.... "the man" having a long talk with you. You may be legal but your gonna get detained... and just cause its right, don't make it right. I have found that the "rule of thumb" is... "there is no rule of thumb".
I have two permits, one from my county of residence and the other from DCJS and while in Dance's gun shop last week, a plain clothes detective (I looked at his credentials) noticed a bulge on my hip under my shirt, and checked me... he told me that I needed BOTH permits to carry... since I was a licensed bondsman I needed the DCJS but when not working I needed the private one... my question to him was... as a bondsman... I am always working, technically??? His response was, "keep them both on you." I just said ok and left. I really don't know if he was correct or not, but who was I to question his authority? I just didn't need the hassle.

Re: Read it and learn, why I carry a weapon
I have been stopped while carrying. It is my right to disengage from any voluntary conversation at any time unless the officer wants to arrest me, something they place their own careers and reputations jeopardy by doing.speezack wrote:... and try walking downtown or around the Governors mansion with a pistol strapped to your waist, open, and see how far you get without.... I have carried OPENLY near the Governor's mansion (and not just at Lobby Day). I have carried OPENLY all along Monument Avenue.
Come to think of it, I have NEVER been stopped in Richmond while OPEN carrying.
Your hypothesis is just that: hypothesis. It is not grounded in fact, but rather speculation and ignorance.
Do you consider yourself to be a "special" citizen then? Are your rights more important, more necessary or more defensible than mine?I have two permits, one from my county of residence and the other from DCJS
He "saw" your bulge? Then you were doing it wrong.and while in Dance's gun shop last week, a plain clothes detective (I looked at his credentials) noticed a bulge on my hip under my shirt, and checked me...
So he lied to you. Is that my fault?he told me that I needed BOTH permits to carry...
Generally I would say you are an otherwise law-abiding citizen. How does he know (or need to know) that you are a bondsman? What does that have to do with anything?I really don't know if he was correct or not, but who was I to question his authority?
The next time you are stopped and told something by a member of law enforcement - demand a cite to the LAW. If you just take their word for it, they will believe they can get away with using that as an excuse.
Sometimes you "permit carry" guys make this too easy.
Re: Read it and learn, why I carry a weapon
I am aware I can open carry here; I don't want to. I loathe attracting attention as a matter of course, but when firearms are involved? No way.Chasbo00 wrote:Alaska allows CC without a permit too.
