M35A2 Deuce, available in running condition for around $4500. A guy in Maryland sells them.

Well, actually you can run diesels on various vegetable oils, one city ran some recycled oils from fryers in their buses and the rumor was as they pulled away from bus stops they smelled like french fries. M35A2s are multifuel engine they are capable of running on gasoline, unlike most diesels. If you do have to do that you do have to mix a little engine oil in to lubricate the injection pump. Another potential source for fuel for a diesel is home heating fuel. They have basic electrical systems, not computer controlled engines and transmissions where the brain or sensors die and so does the truck, like the FMTVs (Army Cabovers) and the Marines new 7 ton Oshkosh trucks. That would be one of the problems with most vehicles manufactured after about 1990 and that includes the little Toyotas and Wranglers. It would take computers to troubleshoot most problems. The plus side to owning a Chevrolet or Ford is there are a lot of parts out there for them, so they might be repairable for a little while, whereas the diesel trucks with mechanical controlled injection would last longer...
You just have to ask yourself, is he telling you the truth based on knowledge and experience or spreading internet myths?

Yup. Every McDonald's is a source of fuel! Which is kind of the point of this little exercise, isn't it? And think about this, everyone will be swiping food. Who's going to be looting stores for cooking oil? Plus that sumbich'll run any where and probably push through road blocks and it has no electronics.

How bout this...

It comes without an engine/transmission, so you can put what you like in it. I recommend a Cummins 4BT diesel with a NV4500 behind it.

Maybe we should be more concerned with where we'll find fuel than what we'll be using to get us around. No matter what vehicle you choose, you'll need fuel - and you'll likely have to fight someone for it.

I was thinking that I might set up shop at the local Sheetz - kinda take ownership of the place - knowhatimean? :machinegun:

The downside is you have about $100k tied up in them. They are sweet though!

You can find some solid LR Defenders out there, old jeeps, suburbans...anything before computers killed the car. The best option to have is a diesel engine, at least you have the option of raiding the used frier oil at every McD's, BK, Wendy's, and KFC. :scooter:

I've got some bad news for you on the Defenders, I had the opportunity to serve with some British in Iraq and a Land Rover aint the most reliable transportation. Lucas electrical components aren't very good. As one of the jokes go about Britain, "You know why the British drink warm beer? Because Lucas makes refrigeration too. They did like the diesel variants better than the gas variants, but they still would rather have had more of our HMMWVs.

Urban Assault Vehicle. Bill Murray invaded the USSR and rescued POWs. AND scored. That is my first choice.
