Great Idea from Remington

Post by gunderwood »

If you don't know, Remington's military arm bought AAC a while back as part of a play for the military's new 300WM sniper rifle. Basically the new 300WM is an upgraded R700, but with lots of new features including a AAC suppressor as standard. While the milspec gear is very expensive, Remington has released a special model which makes suppressing a 700 even easier.

This is a good reasonable package and certainly something you can build on, although if you are willing to spend closer to $1200,Remington sells 700s which sport M24/40 reject barrels (cosmetic only) which will be much better shooter, but you would need to get the barrel threaded yourself for a suppressor if you were so inclined.

This package uses the new trigger which IMHO isn't as good as the old triggers, but it isn't a big deal because you are likely to upgrade the trigger to an after market at some point. A 1:10 twist is a bit fast for the standard 175SMK (ideal is 1:11.25), but anything between 1:10 and 1:11.25 is a good long range shooter. Even 1:12 can work well with some guns for the heavy bullets. Overall this looks like a good low cost package. Googe shows these going for as low as $600.

You have the option of several good, reasonably priced suppressors:

There is also a quick detach model, but be warned that the you must also buy the muzzle brake or flash hider in addition to the suppressor and those get pricey quick.

While AAC isn't the cheapest suppressors, they are very high quality.

Great idea and remington ? Ain't that what city people call a oxymorn ? :hysterical: :hysterical: :hysterical:

I have 2 older remington rifles, a 660 and a 700 classic but I wouldn't give 2 cents for the new ones. You are right about the new trigger, the X-mark. Seems everyone I have heard of buying one replaces it with a good after market one.

I must have gotten lucky last year, I picked up a 700 SPS DM (detachable magazine) in .30-06 for a good price, it has a standard trigger. It shot groups right around an inch at 100 yards with the first ammo I tried in it, so I didn't even try other ammo. I have heard nothing but good things about the X-Mark trigger. I like the trigger that came in my rifle, so it won't be going anywhere unless it starts messing up. I have read about the 700's potential trigger problems, seen some of the videos, and checked mine immediately. I am very happy with it.
You just have to ask yourself, is he telling you the truth based on knowledge and experience or spreading internet myths?

It's a steal if you plan to put a can on a .308 bolt gun. It's really a steal if you plan to shoot heavy subsonics, which is why it has the faster twist rifling.

I've been waffling on getting one since they were brought out last summer. Other projects have just been more important.

I'm hoping this will be successful so Remington will push suppressors further into the mainstream and perhaps force other manufacturers to do the same.

The tea leaves are not hopeful on this point. Since AAC was acquired by Remington there have been several subtle (and not subtle) moves to reposition them away from the civilian silencer market and more to government/military sales. They bought them to fully integrate the ACR system in-house for governmental sales.

AAC's customer service and sales programs for the private sector have never been that great, and it's been getting worse since they got bought. Once AAC is fully integrated into Remington/Cerberus in another year or so, I would be surprised if they had much of a civilian sales program left.

I've heard the rumblings and I hope they are wrong. Time will tell.
