Snow today
Man I just went out to the store and it's like an ice rink already out there,,Slipping and sliding everywhere and a lot of folks out getting stuff....The State Police will earn their pay today and tonight for sure,, If it's like the usual storm there will be "Crashes " in the hundreds, hell maybe a thousand or so... Would reccomend to anyone if you have to go out make it a brief trip.... With no snow removal or salting the whole place is gonna be one humongous hockey rink.

Re: Snow today
I wish they'd let me go home from work early. I can already see cars slipping and sliding out there from my office window.

Re: Snow today
While I am confident in my skills driving in the snow, there just doesn't seem to be that good of a reason to go out in this. I can find things to do around the house.

I'm waiting a few hours so that they can get some salt down and a plow of the main roads. I'll be heading out long before rush hour though.YuDanJa wrote:I wish they'd let me go home from work early. I can already see cars slipping and sliding out there from my office window.

Stuck at work until 20:00 (8). Ambulance crews don't get to go home early.
Anyone out and about take your time, and be careful.

Traffic is already pretty ugly in Hampton Roads. We don't get much of the white stuff 'round these parts.
Re: Snow today
Man, I grew up in NY/NJ and I have navigated some 25 years of brutal snow storms & black ice in my day. I trained my wife to drive in the worst conditions in a rear wheel drive mustang no less. I have really never been afraid to drive in snow...until I mover to Hampton Road!
Man what the Hell!!!! I should have figured that 80% of the residents can't drive in snow (because they can't drive in rain) What I didn't realize is the 19% who are too stupid to drive with caution! They drive the 4x4 like they are in an M1 Abrams Tank only to wind up in a multicar pileup!
Yes there is a small percentage of people with brains enough to drive appropriately... they are usually the ones honked & cursed at!
Be safe guys!

Having lived all over the country myself I put it at closer to 95% that can't drive in this crap..One time about 20 years ago I ventured out in the snow around here in VB,,,,I quickly realized my error and returned home , From that time on I just stock up early , stay in and watch it snow and hope that noone gets killed that doesn;t deserve it....

Re: Snow today
I was passed by a girl with Minnesota plates on her car. She was moving fast and weaving in and out of traffic on Rt3 in Fredericksburg. I was thinking "sure, you have snow driving experience, but the roads aren't maintained like they are in MN either." I felt bad for hoping to see her in a ditch.
I did get some satisfaction from the Mercedes driver who was following me; not tailgating but closer than conditions warranted. I turned into a side street and he followed. He fishtailed a bit, straightened, then came to a stop. The crown of the road provided enough slope that he was stuck!
It only takes 2 inches of snow to show us who should not be driving.

Re: Snow today
We're supposed to get more snow over the weekend. Going to take the opportunity to take my 16 year old to an empty parking lot to get some snow driving training in the wife's Hyundai (no way in hell in MY truck!) Although due to the rarity of it it won't be massive experience but gotta get a little taste of what to expect in snow.

Re: Snow today
It just took me 2 1/2 hours to get home to Va Beach from Hampton Bass Pro, I can usually make it in 45-50 minutes. It's bad out there, thankfully I learned to drive in PA in the snow and ice. But I'm home safe from work and more importantly so are my kids, so i'll take it. Good luck to the rest of you all. Be safe.

Good for you...but they really should learn to appreciate the difference between FWD and RWD, though. Take 'em out in the truck, man.cabrera wrote:We're supposed to get more snow over the weekend. The roofers put the new roof on our house yesterday. Talk about shaving things close!
I'm a native of upstate NY (near the great lakes) so I'm well used to a lot of snow but, as others have said, it's not so much about my skill level, it's about the actual snow removal effort and the skill of the other drivers around.
Still, a lot of my neighbors are elderly so in this weather I often wind up making phone calls, getting a list together, and making at least one trip to Wal-mart or the pharmacy.
y'all stay safe and warm!

Re: Snow today
I worked up there in Oswego at the Nine Mile and Fitzpatrick nuclear plants and 48" of snow happened all too often for me..First place I ever experienced a true white out,,,scared the hell out of me! It;s gonna be deadly on the highways here tonight, So ya'all sit tight... Good night to clean guns , recount ammo, or maybe rearrange the gun room, Anything besides the outside!

Re: Snow today
Moving fast down 95 toward Woodbridge now. Roads clear but expect it will be slick in spots. This bus driver was spinning tires all over Crystal City. I road the bus instead of slugging because of all the extra crumple space before getting to me. I was reevaluating my decision there for a while.

Re: Snow today
I drove my S2000 with no issues. Granted I have cold weather tires on it (IMO it is stupid to run max performance summer tires on a RWD car in the winter), but they are cold weather sport tires not snow tires by any stretch of the imagination. I had to be careful as it is possible to get that car to slide easily if you don't drive smooth, but was no big deal.cabrera wrote:Man, I grew up in NY/NJ and I have navigated some 25 years of brutal snow storms & black ice in my day. As a side note, this is my primary complaint against speed limits. People never learn to read the road and the road conditions. Just because the speed limit is 45MPH doesn't mean you can safely drive that speed. You get both kinds. People who drive 15MPH on all roads as soon as there is rain or snow...even when the road has been freshly plowed and salted and people who drive the speed limit regardless of how bad the conditions are. Learn to read the road conditions and know your car.
On the way home I did 10MPH on a small section that usually is 25-35MPH because it wasn't plowed or salted and was plenty slick (any more throttle and I could feel the back end slip sideways a bit...I doubt most people would have noticed it though). I also did 55-65MPH in a 55MPH Interstate (keeping up with traffic) because it was well plowed and salted (just wet). Read the road.

Re: Snow today
Got off of work at 4:30 and the traffic was light and the roads were pretty wet and mushy. No problems at all getting around. Did some errands and then home. Its nice having an all wheel drive vehicle with 4 wheel disc brakes. It just basically goes where you point it. Just make sure there is traction to stop so slow down with enough distance to stop.
The other drivers around here scare the daylights out of me. I actually handle the faster drivers better than the ones who creep.
