New M1-A1

Post by Paliden »

Well I finally saved and traded enough and I now own a Springfield M1-A1 super match preban. All I can tell you is she's nice, real nice. She will shoot the flies off the target, now if I can get back my old form I might be able to do the same! Boy this look like something from the past I remember

Then you don't have enough long guns! The more you have the better to hide a new one. Then you can say with a straight face "Oh I've had that one for a long time, it's not a new one" not that I've ever done that before :hysterical:
Getting this one was like hooking up with an old girlfriend, it felt really good. I keep it where I can see it at all times. No I have not slept with it, did that enough before. Some of you may understand, but at one time that was the best friend I had in the whole world and yes I slept with her every night :friends: Except for the cheek rest and no selector switch, it's a sister to one I carried most of the time.

Paliden, you are starting to make me feel sorry that I gave my M1A1 National Match to my oldest son about 2 years ago along with 10 mags and about 1,000 rds. of National Match ammo my spotting scope stand, gloves and all other equip. that I had for High Power Competition. Yes I remember sleeping with my M-14 many a night and never regretted it nor will I ever. Mine did not have a cheek rest or selector switch either but it was sure a sweet shooter. Hell wish I was young again.

I am sure that it give's you that inside peace that an old friend is home to stay and the peace of mind that you can reach out and touch someone and put them at peace with your old friend. Thank God the Marine Corp's believes that all Marine's are riflemen first and their other MOS second. You start as a 0300 and then a 0311 and always have that mos even if you are later a 8541 you still carry that 0311.
God bless our Marine Corp's and all the other branches of the U.S. Military .

Bill, your right. For the first time in about 2 years I'm feeling at peace with things. I knew when I bought this I would never be able to keep it because it would bring the demons from the past back more. But it was just the reverse. It calmed things down. Wierd huh?
Well when it warms up I'm going to enjoy my trips to the range!!!!

Yep, the ghost's are still there from time to time, but they ain't as bad as they were and you start to have some peace with them after so many year's and some things start to fade.
Hang in there Brother.

I carried/trained with the M16A1's in basic and AIT. When I got to my permanent duty station (Ft. Myer, VA) in 1976 I was issued my very own (for 3.5 years anyway) TRW M14, serial number 1490317. Remembering the serial number hasn't been too hard since I had to recite it at least twice a day to check it out and check it into the arms room in the basement of the barracks.

The first time we went to Ft. A.P. Hill to qualify (spring of 1976) for some reason they had us shoot M16A1's and M14's that day. Except for zeroing the rifle on the "1000 inch" range I'd never fired an M14 before. It was pretty windy that afternoon with a pretty stiff wind from 3 O'clock. With the M16's we were "guessing" how far off the target to the right to hold in order to knock the pop ups down when we got out to the 300 and 350 meter targets. With the M14's we put the sights on the pop ups and just knocked them down. During that part of qualifying I knew I had to "get me one of these rifles!!!" I walked into a small gun store out near Tyson's corner one day and they had 5 Springfield Armory M1's on the rack. I looked them over and took one that cost me $495. A month's pay back in 1978. I still have that rifle and it shoots pretty good. I deer hunted with it in the WV mountains and it happened to be the rifle in my hands everytime I killed a deer (I'm one of those guys who takes one rifle one day and another rifle the next day so the Rem 742, the sporterized M1917 and the 03A4 all spent time in the woods with me).

That is a nice looking rifle you've got. Is it bedded into the stock? If not I'd suggest trying a GI synthetic stock if you intend to be out in the weather with it.
