Went hunting for the first time today (well, now yesterday)
I'd like to thank Zephyp and Vahunter for allowing me to come with them to hunt. This was my first ever hunt. None of us got anything--the deer there apparently are especially wary--but it was still a good time.
Vahunter was working one part of the land, and Zephyp and I were working another. Vahunter saw a couple of younger bucks, naturally when he hadn't yet set up and thus couldn't take a shot. Zephyp and I didn't see any deer at all. We did see several squirrels and a flock of about 20 turkeys, though!
Afterwards, Vahunter and Mrs. Vahunter treated us to some home-cooked venison that had been previously harvested. Mr. Smarty-Pants Zephyp told me it was really opossum roadkill (I initially fell for it and believed it--yes, I'm a city boy--LOL). But yes, venison tastes very good.

I did once I got the right base (Marlin) mounted on it. Standard screws didnt fit. I thought the threads on the receiver were hosed but the Marlin screws snugged right up. And, I suspect that I own yet another rifle that is a better shot than I am...gunderwood wrote:I love hunting with a handle lever-action, glad you like it too.zephyp wrote:Hey T...you knew that Henry and I would pull something and give you a hard time...that's the rule...![]()

I was turning my truck around to park it when I saw the two bucks standing on the hill about 40 yards away watching me. I could'a gotten a shot and the tree's could'a stopped the bullet, but after just dropping DK and T off, the bucks were lined up in their direction. I wasn't about to take the chance of shooting a man on his first deer hunt.
Those possum chops were good huh ?
Maybe next time we'll have some good 'ol 'coon stew.

Re: Went hunting for the first time today (well, now yesterday)
Yep, tasted just like chicken!
That Mosin-Nagant was surprisingly easy to carry all day in the woods. That gun just became my deer rifle. Will eventually stick some optics on it and either a 3x9 or 2x7 scope of some sort on it. Saw the new-model Redfield on DK's Marlin, and it looks pretty clear. You can see Jupiter's brightest moon pretty easily through it. My scope mount is high enough to comfortably accept a 50mm objective, so this is an option I'm also considering.
I also had brought along the Mini-14 Target Rifle with a new "overkill" Simmons scope on it. Vahunter let me shoot his Mini-14 (standard one w/ blade front sight) to see how they handle, plus he had some nice trigger work done on it. We sighted in my Mini (optics only, it's got no irons), and I learned something about these guns (note to Mindflayer here). They toss the brass very far!

Sounds like you had fun. Possum, huh?
Not a big fan of possum - it certainly does not taste like chicken. Snake does, but possum, no.

Wow! That's what I call extreme long range deer hunting!CowboyT wrote:You can see Jupiter's brightest moon pretty easily through it. My scope mount is high enough to comfortably accept a 50mm objective, so this is an option I'm also considering.

Right...I wonder what the drop would be for that with a 100 yard zero...couple million miles maybe...gunderwood wrote:Wow! So, here's a problem for the braniacs...160 grain bullet fired at 2400 fps...where do I need to hold to impact anywhere on Jupiter's largest moon with a zero of 100 yards...thats a pretty large target by the way...

Oh, you guys are bad.
But, since the question was asked, we'd actually need to be traveling faster than 2,400 fps to escape Earth orbit. It's more like 25,000 mph, which means about 36,667 fps. So, I'm afraid that any deer on Jupiter's largest moon are, for the moment, safe from that .30-30.

However, that is why I'm working on a wildcat. It necks down a Saturn V to 17 or 20 cal. I really like the 20 cal 55gr Bergers for getting out of the atmosphere, but the TOF is much better with the lighter 17cal since most of the trajectory has practically zero drag.

Indeed, it must achieve escape velocity...

Man, I just got a hankering for bacon-wrapped venison and hash browns and a pot of really good coffee.
If the SHTF, I think I would miss that the most. Really good, really fresh coffee. I guess my plan should be food & water, ammo, then hit every coffee shop and liquor store between here and hell to be stocked.

Young keeps about 20 pounds of coffee on hand all the time...and, if we run out of coffee she has about 200 pounds of rice...makes good wine...

Hey Cowboy T I am glad that you have joined the ranks of Hunting as it is an American Tradition. If you are hunting with those 2 you might want to ask them what happens if you take a shot and MISS (NOT saying that you will) the deer! You might want to wear a shirt that you don't care about.
