How long CCW permit for change of address.

Post by zeroselect »

I moved recently and turned in my CCW permit for a new one for a change of address. I paid my $10 dollars and they told me it would be out in the mail the next day. Well its been a week and still nothing in my mail box.

Should I have gotten it back by now?

The only one that can answer your question will be the clerk's office. Give them a call and ask.

My guess is that the "next day" estimate was a bit optimistic.

Thanks I'll give them a call.

I was shocked when they told me they'll mail it out the following day and also i asked them if they needed another envelope with my new address and stamp but they said they would take care of that.

You probably could have waited for it on the spot.

The last time I did mine it took over a week and they required me to come in twice! I had to fill out the paperwork in person, wait a week+, and then come back in to pick it up. They refused to mail it.

Got to love good old corrupt Stafford County.

So since you 'turned in" you other one...you are without now? Do you NEED to get another just for an address change?

Does VA have it written into law that if you are found carrying without your license on you, you can provide the license to the court and have all charges dropped? Reason being...even tho you don't have a physical license you are still licensed.

Va law dictates that you must have your CHP on your person, as well as one of the accepted forms of photo id, anytime that you are carrying your handgun concealed.

18.2-308 H

H. The permit to carry a concealed handgun shall specify only the following information: name, address, date of birth, gender, height, weight, color of hair, color of eyes, and signature of the permittee; the signature of the judge issuing the permit, of the clerk of court who has been authorized to sign such permits by the issuing judge, or of the clerk of court who has been authorized to issue such permits pursuant to subsection D; the date of issuance; and the expiration date. The permit to carry a concealed handgun shall be no larger than two inches wide by three and one-fourth inches long and shall be of a uniform style prescribed by the Department of State Police. The person issued the permit shall have such permit on his person at all times during which he is carrying a concealed handgun and shall display the permit and a photo-identification issued by a government agency of the Commonwealth or by the United States Department of Defense or United States State Department (passport) upon demand by a law-enforcement officer.

Just "being licensed" isn't enough.

thanks for the info. PA has the same law but allows for presentation at the hearing if need be...that's where my line of thinking was coming from ...
18 Pa.C.S. § 6122: Proof of license and exception
(a) General rule.--When carrying a firearm concealed on or about one's person or in a vehicle, an individual licensed to carry a firearm shall, upon lawful demand of a law enforcement officer, produce the license for inspection. Failure to produce such license either at the time of arrest or at the preliminary hearing shall create a rebuttable presumption of nonlicensure.

Interesting.....

I guess that here in Va, it goes along with the "theory" that you aren't supposed to drive without the driver's license physically in your pocket. I say "theory" since so many people violate that one and get off by showing it later.

You are not required to change your address on the CHP...an address change request is purely voluntary and up to the holder...

After I moved earlier this year, I went to the Clerk of Courts office to change the address on my CHP. I was told that as long as my drivers license was up to date, that I was OK. I did not have to change my CHP address until I renewed it.

A few months after I changed address, I walked in to the clerk's office with proof of new address. I waited a few minutes, signed a new one, and I was out with an up-to-date, laminated permit.
