Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS) hmm...

Post by allingeneral »

I went to the Northern Virginia Gun Club (NVGC) Sunday and found that the lower range was closed because it was Cowboy Action Shooters day. I was a little surprised when I drove around the corner and saw everyone. They were all fully dressed with chaps and six-shooters and leather belts/holsters, vests, hats and boots.

So, I sauntered on up to these gentlemen and leaned up against the hitchin' post just to watch what was going on. It was pretty interesting and a few of them were very good shots. Color me impressed! It really looked like a lot of fun. I might have o check it out one of these days.

The following is not of the group I saw on Sunday...it's just a random youtube video that google found for me.

Cowboy action shooting is like LARPing with guns...

On a more serious note, CA loads are very low recoil. Most reloading books have a "Cowboy Action" section which gives you safe, low charge loads.

Also commonly referred to as sass single anction shooters society. It is good clean fun for the whole family most are timed with obstacles and pop up tagets. Its been years since I've attended a shoot but back then you were limited you .45 cal and lower and the shotguns can't have the ejectors. Basically the hardware of the era.

Sounds like a good place to shoot my .44 cal Navy Colt (Black Powder) and a lot of fun.

I used to participate in the Mountain Man Rendezvous and that was a lot of fun with all the shooting, hatchet throwing, drinking around the campfire and swapping lies. Everyone was dressed for the time period and was held 3 times a year.

Let me know when the next one is coming around and I would be up for it and it sounds like it would be good fun for a Shoot and Meet weekend.

Well, I always thought CAS was going a bit too far with all the regalia and persona's, but the shooting looked like great fun.

LARPing -- now that's just beyond nuts! I was happily unaware of this activity before your post.

I have heard of it but never seen it in action. It looks cool! BTW not really like larping as you aren't shooting at each other.

It sure does look like fun. There are two things stopping me from doing it:

1.) Time. I just don't have enough of it at this point in my life (yet). But that will change.

2.) The $1,500 to $2,000 to buy the four guns required to do the sport. But that, too, will change eventually.

Those Cowboy Action low-pressure loads are lots of fun. I shoot them in my (double-action) guns all the time for target practice. Such loads are easy to shoot, very kid-friendly, and extremely kind to firearms. The whole dress-up and alias thing is also cool ("The Loan Arranger Rides Again!").

hahaha "The Loan Arranger" :hysterical:

Does one have to be a SASS member to enjoy Cowboy Action Shooting? I don't think I want to pay for yet another membership...

LARPing does not require you to fight anyone. LARPing is often focused around "battles," but it is not exclusively so.
A live action role-playing game (LARP) is a form of role-playing game where the participants physically act out their characters' actions. The players pursue goals within a fictional setting represented by the real world, while interacting with each other in character. The outcome of player actions may be mediated by game rules, or determined by consensus among players. Event arrangers called gamemasters decide the setting and rules to be used and facilitate play. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_actio ... aying_game
Strictly speaking, CAS may be a variant of LARPing, although some groups just dress up and shoot...others go much further. I wasn't judging it, but I did take a second to find a funny video of it.

To each his own. Lots of people dress up in camo and shoot tactical rifles or go running through the woods in tactical gear for a 3 gun shoots. Granted the media labels them as militia, but that is another story. I have nothing against dressing up like a cowboy, but personally I draw the line at creating an alternate personality/character.

I'm a member with the Virginia City Marshals. We're an indoor/winter club and shoot at the NRA range. Our next shoot is Election Day, Tues 2 Nov. We'll be there for a safety talk ~1845, and shooting ~1900. Come one, come all. Its a snapshot of the fun that can be had outdoors, but we're shooting..and thats the fun.
