Opinions?

Post by Jim »

I'm only minutes away from shutting down my system, but I thought I'd go ahead and post this.
What do y'all think of this rifle? I've always wanted a .458, but couldn't afford one. No, I won't be going after Capes in Africa, I just want one to play with. on the other hand, you never know when a White Rhino might wander up in the back yard, right? :hysterical:
Y'all think it's worth just shy of 6 bills?

I'll see y'all early next week.
See ya'!

If I was getting a heavy gun like that, I'd get a double, but that's just me. BTW, did you know someone makes inserts for shotguns that take centerfire ammo? I found an 18" insert for 45-70 that goes into a 12 Gauge shotgun for $95. I'm thinking of getting two of them and making my SxS into a double rifle.

I have a double 12, but it's an old LeFever Nitro Special that my Great Uncle left to me when he passed in '80. I do shoot it, but I don't think I'd wanna shoot hot .45-70s through it. Besides, with my double 12, there's no way to really AIM it as it simply has a bead on the front. And there's no way I would consider having it modified to rifle sights.
I've always wanted a .458 bolt and I just thought I'd try for some feedback on the rifle I linked.

I've heard good things about that particular rifle, I personally don't have a use for one. As for the 45-70, I'd load it up with hard cast 500gr bullets and black powder. The removable inserts make it easier to clean the salt out and it would make a viable Big 5 gun. I have an old SxS I got for free, and I could probably get a small red dot mount set up for it. BTW, here's the link: http://www.mcace.com/Insertsindex.htm They have other calibers, too.

I shot a .460 Weatherby Magnum once -- and once was enough.

Yeah, the .460 will bump you around a might. Like you, I fired one one time and that was enough.
I can handle the .458, though. I'll be loading 500 gr. round nose bore riders cast in a Rapine mold to 25 BHN over a 100 % case density charge of IMR 7383 milsurp powder. That'll be enough for recreation or the occasional Cape that wanders up in the back yard.

Iv'e been thinking about a .458 for my next rifle. I don't really need one but then again it'll have plenty of company in the safe. I shot one about 35 years ago and still remember it well today.

Jim, best of luck in your quest. It will be a neat rifle to own and shoot on occasion.
