I have a problem (or, I bought another one)

Post by Mindflayer »

Went to the Chantilly gun show today in search of an XDM 45 for my friend, and perhaps for me. I got to DK after he'd sold his last one and a lot of the other places were just too high. Then Jerry put one out and cut a good deal....

Image

This is getting ridiculous. I really have to stop now. My friend (one of the two that got me into this hobby) said I should keep it after taking it to SEG and punching one giant ragged hole.

So, the question is - do I 1) sell it to my friend 2) sell my XDM 3.8" 9mm or 3) keep all four guns, confident that I am truly done?

Why would you sell it to your friend? Why didn't he/she buy it themselves? Regardless of your intentions, you could be on thin ice as the background check (assume it wasn't a private sale?) asks if you are the actual purchasers of the firearm. Buy enough guns and it will happen that you purchase one, shoot it a few times and sell it quickly. It just wasn't what you thought.

He lives in WV, and his price locally is a lot higher than ours. I would FFL it to his favorite dealer.

That's what I have been told re: buying one that just doesn't work. I was iffy on the S&W 642 since the rosewood handle made the gun unpleasant to shoot through a box of 50. I put on the Crimson Trace LG-405s today and what a world of difference. Still not my favorite to shoot, but so much easier on the hands.

As far as the XDM 45.... It's awesome. Shooting my friend's XD 45 tactical is what got me started down this path, and I just like the way the XD series feels. I just have an XDM 3.8" 9mm (shoots great), an XD 9mm subcompact (CCW), a S&W 642 (CCW hot weather outfits), and now the XDM 45 - and my AR. I am going to guess 4 handguns doesn't sound like much to you guys. This quick gearing up just has me a bit surprised at my normally frugal nature.

Time to shift focus, perhaps.

You will always need more ammo.

What good are the guns if you can't get ammo? Stockpile! Generally (min):

.22lr: 10k minimum and variety of types/brands (.22s can be picky about ammo, so diversity is your friend). It is cheap and versatile. Everyone should have several .22s and lots of ammo.
Semi-auto handguns: At least 1k of HP per gun. If you have 3 9mm, you need 3k rounds. Keep plenty of practice ammo too.
Revolvers: 250 rounds per gun and some practice.
Semi-auto rifles: 3k rounds per rifle. Military surplus is your friend. A battle load (300ish loaded in mags) of CQB stuff like Hornady's TAP.
Tactical bolt action: 250 hand loads and enough components to quickly load up at least 1k.
Big anti-material: 100 rounds and components for another 250 rounds.

I don't always keep that, but I stay pretty close. Don't forget that for the semi-auto handguns and rifles you want to keep enough mags around to load up a battle load or two. Generally 10-20% of your stockpile is a good idea.

He was suggesting you start stockpiling ammo.

It's not a problem unless it causes you to pay the rent/mortgage late, removes food from your families pieholes or angers the spouse/ live in significant other to the point of causing a breakup. You are an adult (you able to purchase a pistol after all) and you don't have to justify your actions to anyone, unless you are in a relationship with them...
You just have to ask yourself, is he telling you the truth based on knowledge and experience or spreading internet myths?

Of all the hobbies you could have this is one of the more practical. While model air-planes are neat, they really are only a hobby and nothing more. Training with a pistol is fun, but it could save your life (if you carry it or keep it read around the house). People forget that the original reason for the NRAs existence was make sure civilians had some training with military pattern rifles before they were drafted. That is why the NRA competitions primarily focus on military pattern rifles.

It is an unfortunate fact of life that human beings must know how to defend themselves. Hobbies like firearms, martial arts, exercising, etc. are fun hobbies that have practical sides too.

Not to mention that firearms are a relatively safe investment...

The funniest part of that whole mess was the very last bit where a mod stepped in:
ATTN. SPECOPS AND GECKO45 my secret username is CIDDECEP and I am your S2. My authorization code is Six Wun Quebec Oscar Fife. Your presence here is tactically dangerous and compromises our overall mission parameter. Cease and desist all activity on this board. Our “enemies” are deft at computer hacking and may trace you back to our primary locale. You have forced me to compromise my situation to protect your vulnerable flank. This issue will be addressed later.

You guys may laugh, but I am buying all these handguns for my new job working for a US Government agency that shall be unnamed. Our mandate is to provide security for the nation's hallmark retail establishments and ensure the safety of the United States's corporate capitalism consumer interfacing sites. Tysons Corner and the Galleria are primary examples of such establishments. While I am not at liberty to discuss the exact nature of our operations, I can tell you that Operation SALE (Stealth Action Law Enforcement) and DISCOUNT (Delta Interdiction Stealth Counter Operations UNit Tactics) were critical in stopping two major anti-sheeple attacks. If not for the valiant actions of my team, hundreds of thousand plus US dollar purses and shoes at Neimann Marcus and Saks may have been compromised.

Seriously, though, I've really enjoyed this "hobby". Just been kinda eye-popping to see how much I have spent in the last few months - but then again, it's no more than a new camera body, new lenses, or a new laptop. I just have to figure out how to make the firearms a business deduction like I can with the other gear.

The friend for whom I was also looking for the XDM 45 told me to keep the gun and do not sell it to him. He thinks I need a .45 ACP.

Until you put engines in them and hook up some remote-controlled servos on the control surfaces. Then it becomes tactically useful.

I'm not laughing bro. I shoot 2000 rounds, run 35 miles, and practice martial arts for 12 hours every day to be fit enough to protect retail venues....

For an army sure, I'm not sure my HOA would appreciate a recon UAV continuously scouting the neighborhood.
