Jes' an update -
Finances didn't materialize for VMI, so he decided to run his reserves training all the way thru, then reapply to VMI for '11
The arse lead accumulation has been removed ! He's Platoon Chaplain, qualified as Expert with rifle, and his platoon won initial drill for their DI's 1st time. He says things have been running smooth ever since then...
4wks to go to graduation.

Excerpt from a letter home, and I quote...
"Well it turns out rifle qual wasn't over yet. We had to do two stages of fire. What I told you about was table 1. Table 2 is basic combat marksmanship. I got 94 out of 100 in that which is EXPERT of course! The scores add up to 323 of 350 total possible. I'm the best in the platoon, and missed company high shooter by 1 point! Oh well, that's life."
Man I'm lookin' forward to getting the full debrief!... graduation Aug 20, Lord willing and the creek don't rise.

And he turns 18 on the 17th - now that's a cool birthday present!

Congrats Glen to you and your son...Ft Sill!!!! I took my boot training there. Definitely the butt end of the Army. Better warn him about Lawton. When I was there (well, its been a couple of years...1977 maybe) it was nothing but hookers, tattoo parlors, hookers, bars, pawn shops, hookers, and swindlers. Did I mention hookers?

Congratulations Glen! You should be proud of your son. We wish him the best, and thanks to you both for his service.
Re: My oldest son signed up for the Marines NROTC today...
Reading Vern's proud dad thread got me thinking about this old post...
Evan got his second conditional appointment to VMI last year, was making ready to go - and the Marines called him and said 'Hey, your reserve unit is going active' ... VMI back on the backburner.
So after a successful 7mo deployment, he returned home and with his third conditional appointment, made ready to matriculate.
He made it. I watched him take his oath this past Sunday, at New Market in the pouring rain.
I'm proud of you, son. Where there's a will, there's a way. Carpe diem. All that good stuff.
