This reminded me of a show Top Gear did (British car show, odd sense of humor that is funny once you get the inside jokes). They set up a race between a dog sled team and a modified Toyota pickup truck...to the north pole. One of the co-hosts was with the dog sled team, while the other two drove the truck. Of course, both had professionals helping them as part of the team. You don't get the NP solo.

They carried a 12ga pump action shotgun in a scabbard which was mounted to the side of the pickup for polar bear protection. It was loaded with massive slugs like these:
