Collapse of Society 4x4

Post by gunderwood »

Topic says it all.

What truck would you want if things went south. Pickup, SUV, military surplus? Gas, diesel? Etc.

Remember, there wont' be any autozones to go to for parts. It needs off road capability, but enough finesse so you can get away from bandits. Enough power to get a move on, get unstuck, hull lots of guns, food, water, and people, but not eat so much fuel you can't use it (leaning toward a diesel that can burn lots of other fuels). Needs to be defensible while on the move (leaning towards a pickup so you can have a "gunner").

You fill in the blank. What would you want, how would you use it, and why.

Small, maneuverable, easily concealed, go most anywhere dependability, and she looks great!

If I can't have this, then I'd go with one of the bigger ATVs (Kubota)... Don't envision a lot of highway touring in a collapse...

For a SHTF situation, how about the original 4-wheel-drive, a horse? Those can go anywhere and no road is needed. Fuel = grass and stream/creek water. Can carry a load if needed. Seemed to work pretty well back in the day.

the Steelwheels truck is ready for when things heat up. Literally. This off-roader is built on the Oshkosh M100 platform used for, among other things, airport crash trucks. With this you can drive into the heart of the zombie queen's lair, rescue your friends, and torch the place, all the while making a delicious meal inside the TGIF-esque interior.

Very enjoyable! & Nice topic Gunderwood!!!
Be particular, and be vigilant, as the enemy will only attack on two occasions:
When you're ready or when you're not ready.

Also never forget, that everyone who shows up, is not necessarily there to help.

A new class of vehicle to the field of fire appliance design that is capable of reconnaissance as well as suppression will be introduced by Amatoya. As indicated by research, there is a need to develop an advanced and highly specialized light tanker which must function primarily as areconnaissance vehicle while providing unparalleled vehicle and crew safety/survivability. It also need to maintain superior off road capabilities and possess appropriate fire suppression technology for the purpose of initial response and front line defense.

I'd rather have an old Dodge Power Wagon when the SHTF. Those trucks have survived three wars and are still going strong.

How about reasonable vehicle costs. I don't think many of us on here (not me for sure) have the funds to purchase a million dollar 4x4. Besides, the military would just air strike you because to be driving around in something like that must mean you're up to no good.

My choice would be a full size Ford Bronco, built for off road, good cargo area, highly maneuverable, 351 cid power and we get 17/19 mpg with it

Ever since Clinton made us bug out of there instead of dismantling the joint, I've been partial to the Somalian "technical." That'll be a 4x4 lightweight Toyota pickup with extra fuel tanks and a .50MG swivel-mounted in the bed.

A late 90's Jeep Cherokee with a roof rack, spare fuel cans, etc.
They are still pretty easy to work on and the ones still on the road are the ones that were put together right and are astoundingly tough vehicles.

Yep. Absolutely. A power wagon will climb up a wall if it needs to. Weld a cow-pusher on the front.

In all seriousness if society collapses then I'd be happy driving my boots. Any kind of vehicle is going to draw unwanted attention from all quarters. And, you can hide yourself alot easier than hiding some gaudy vehicle....
