Tolerance of white militias exemplifies racial double standard

Imagine that the inauguration of President George W. Bush had sparked an explosive rise in African American militia groups. Suppose thousands of heavily armed black men began gathering at training camps in wooded areas throughout the country, devising military tactics for "taking back their country" after what they believed was an electoral coup.

Do you think Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney would have reacted to a black militaristic buildup as coolly as President Obama has to the phenomenal growth of white militias?

Since Obama took office last year, the number of white militias has shot up from about 170 to more than 500, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors extremist groups in the United States. Armed with enough firepower to take on a police department, some of these groups are honing their sniper skills using photographs of Obama for target practice.

They cling to the delusion that the nation's first black president is somehow a subversive working for Muslim extremists, and they aim to bring him down.

"If the people we saw running around armed to the teeth were black, I think their organizations would be destroyed in a matter of hours," Mark Potok, director of the Southern Poverty Law Center's Intelligence Project, told me. "If people saw on their TV screens photos of black militia members shooting at images of a white president, I don't think they would last."

No kidding.

This racial disparity comes to mind whenever I see militia leaders carping about government "tyranny" while enjoying the special privileges that come with being white. One such group, the Southeast Michigan Volunteer Militia, was featured in a documentary, "The Rise of the New Right," that aired last week on MSNBC and was narrated by Chris Matthews, the host of "Hardball."

"Five areas that we focus on are crime, disaster, invasion, tyranny and terrorism," said Michael Lackomar, a spokesman for the militia group. "All five of those cover threats that would interrupt our ways of life."

He's worried about terrorism? It's terrifying just to see his militia lurking behind trees, dressed in camouflage and wielding who-knows-what military armament picked up at some gun and ammo show.

What's even more astounding is that Lackomar's group has links to the Hutaree militia, another Michigan-based group, whose members were arrested by the FBI in March and charged with plotting to kill a police officer and then slaughter scores more by setting off a bomb at the funeral.

The Hutaree's intent, according to federal law enforcement officials, was to trigger an uprising against the federal government. Lackomar's militia was among the groups that helped Hutaree members, unwittingly or not, hone their shooting skills in preparation for the assault.

And yet the southeastern Michigan militia continues to operate with impunity, as if it were some latter-day Army of the Potomac.

Let's say then-Vice President Cheney found out that a black militia group had ties to a terrorist organization seeking to levy war against the United States. Say hello to Guantanamo.

On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled, in effect, that you can go to prison for trying to hold a peace talk with groups deemed to be foreign terrorist organizations. But if the group is a home-grown white terrorist organization, it's apparently okay not just to associate with them but also to offer them military training as they plot against the country.

Maybe Obama is just being savvy by not coming down hard on the militia. As Potok said, "There's a huge amount of anger, and what we are really lacking at this moment is a kind of spark." In an apparent attempt to defuse the tension, Obama does such things as supporting a U.S. Supreme Court decision crippling D.C.'s gun control law and then signs a bill that allows visitors to national parks to carry guns.

Still, gun advocates keep him in their sights. They show up outside presidential town hall meetings brandishing firearms. When a young black man, identified only as Chris, showed up at one such event with a rifle strapped to his back, white protesters cited him as proof that race had nothing to do with their contempt for Obama.

But they missed the point.

Had the black rifleman showed for, say, Ronald Reagan's "states' rights" speech in Philadelphia, Miss., back in 1980, they might still be dredging the Pearl River for his remains.

It is interesting to note that everything this article assigns to the "white american militias" is just "theory," while it is an everyday occurance in the intercity drug and gang wars.

So, because we are armed and not happy politically we are a threat to society when in fact we have done nothing, while actual violence is commited by victims?

I've known people that have been saying "racial civil war in america" for most of my adult life...never thought it was possible, just "tin foil hat" stuff...

my wife and I and our daughter just moved to leesburg from waldof MD, in charles county(considered southren maryland), I went to a high school that was mostly black traditionaly, but my parents moved to that area right as the county hit a huge growth spurth so it was black kids and a bunch of new to the area middle class white kids....had a good experience, no real racial tensions. I tell you the Black community there at the time was mostly rural folks that had lived there for generations...I use to hunt and fish w/ quite a few guys I played football and wrestled with. It was pretty peacefull, I'm sure there were some white's that didn't care for blacks of course but for the most part it was a non-issue, it never really saw the light of day.

about 10 years later (I'm class of 93) the county took a terrible turn and now is tottaly different...the black community changed from decent rural folks to transplants from DC and PG county. The crime is way out of control, the community is just a shell of what it what was.....it's not a nice place to live anymore not becasue it's a mostly black community, it's because the kind of people that live there, I don't mean thier race... gov housing is everywhere, crime shot up to a crazy rate, I mean the St charles town center has robberies, stabbings, and rapes. The neighborhoods all took down their community baskestball courts cause of all the troubles they casued. You go to the mall it's all thugs, cussing at the top of their lungs w/ no respect for anything. These youths are nothing like the blacks kids I went to school with...I'm told that this is what "urban" culture is.... I don't care what you call it it's disgracefull.

Now there's a lot of tension in that community...couple of months ago a ex-con who was still dealing drugs was shot and killed by some officers after he tried to grab one of the officer's gun durring a traffic stop, now not only did he have large amount of drugs in his truck, he was also a violent felon. This was not a "good citizen" the whole thing is casught on the dash cam...grand jury says good shooting...the NAACP wants to make a case out of it..... the officers were white, the offending bad guy is black.. but what the community is all focused on is the race of the officers and the race of the now dead drug dealer...THE GUY"S A DRUG DEALER... but that's what our world has come too

You speak out against our president your a racist, if your black and you speak out against him your a "tom"... if our enconomy gets worse and the crime in these communities across our country gets worse at some point and time it's going to come to a head....and some idiot will use race as the spark..just like hitler did w/ the Jews, or the Klan did in South post-civil war.

God I hope it doesn't come to that

I don't know what to think what's happening on our country today... I tell ya I'm so scared for my daughter....My grandfather left my father a pretty good country, it's not the same country he's left for me, and what I'm leaving for my daughter, it brings tears to my eyes.

It's a stretch I know but it would be nice,, My attitude toward welfare is this ..If you can walk,you can work. There are lots of roads that need cleaning and crappers to clean and many other things we could trade the lazy SOB's for their welfare checks. The government created these thugs you speak of, and when it suits the government to rid an area of them, they come up with federally funded housing projects for "low income victims of society" but they ALWAYS build those places away from where the politicians and well off people want to live. Its social engineering at its finest. The next time you hear of one of these "projects" breaking ground, look to the opposite side of of town, there you will see new condos and upscale gated communities going up for "professional " types .. but the "low income" people are happy temporarily too, they have been thrown a bone. This is not a new phenomenon (since the class of 93 graduated) its just that your historical perspective is relatively fresh.
