Police are having these problems with cameras recording them. It is not always clear when they can go from pepper spray to their Glock. I'm keeping it simple with only two choices, police often have several.

I can't help but respect someone who's job requires them to insert themselves into possible danger on a daily basis.

In this video, the officer was overpowered by the subject. Pepper spray didn't slow the subject down at all.

Belligerent driver out of control. Officer deploys pepper spray to prevent driver from seeing to drive. Officer was immediately murdered.

These examples demonstrate how pepper spray can escalate violence into a terrible situation. Some may point out "issues" with each officer's handling of the situation, but that isn't the purpose of my posting these examples.

Also be prepared to show a jury where it became a life or death situation and be able to convince them that they would have done the same thing in your situation. Not everyone reacts the same to any given situation. Many times over many years I had people in my face shouting and throwing their hands around. I could not do much about it unless they made an effort to spit on me. Now they had comitted an assault on my person and I had the right to make an arrest. Trust me in this day of AIDS etc. you would want to take a person into the lockup that had spit into your face so that you could find out all about them.
