Ranges around Yorktown, VA

Hey all, I am a resident of Seaford, VA around Yorktown, VA. I usually do my shooting up around Richmond but the drive is getting longer and longer. Wondering if anyone knows of a good place to shoot (including rifles) around the area, preferably not one of the ones over in Va Beach or Norfolk either. Thanks.

The only one I know of is the Lafayette Gun Club. And it is pretty close to you and really nice. It's right off 17. But it is a Gun Club and you have to be a member or a guest of a member (which I am). All the others this side of the bridge are indoor pistol ranges.

Definitely Lafayette is the best and I think only for rifle http://www.4lgc.org/ and is located in Seaford, VA. The Marksman in Newport News and Superior Pawn in Hampton have indoor ranges.

It is a private club and you need someone to sponsor you, as far as I know acceptance is pretty automatic, if they are accepting new members, which they are now. The rifle and shotgun ranges are open during daylight, except Sunday morning, whenever a range officer is present, which is most afternoons and weekends. The 50-ft pistol range is open 24/7, except for maintenance and occasional matches. There is also a small bore range, that is mostly used by the Jr rifle club but can be used by others.

Fees are about $150 per year, plus initiation fees. You can bring as many guests as you like, but if it is crowded the guests would have to give up their lanes to members, if they were shooting on their own lanes to start with.

If your'e not a member of LGC there's Superior Gun and Pawn in Hampton on Mercury Blvd. It's kind of a hole in the wall place.
There's an indoor 25 yard facility in Newport News called The Marksman. Head up to Jefferson Ave. and hang a right. After you pass 84 Lumber and bump over the railroad tracks there's a road that goes behind the car dealership on the left. That road swings around and after a half mile or so you'll see Marksman on the left. Indoor pistols and .22 rifles only.

There is also a rifle and shotgun range run by the game service in Chickahominy, but it is limited to fall and winter only.

It is not tough to become a member of the LGC, just have to ask someone to sponsor you and kick in some bucks.

A few years ago when I shot at Superior they allowed rifles. I have no idea why you'd want to shoot a rifle bigger than a .22 at a 50' range but at least one person did.

No pistols at Chicahominy.
