If it can be seen by an LEO looking in from the driver or passenger window, then it's open. A firearm that is in a holster on your side would be fine in a car. It is still being carried openly.
If you don't have a CHP, it would be in your best interest to unholster it and place it where it can be seen from any angle of approach to your vehicle.
