New to forum and to VA

Post by pahighlander »

Just moved to Warrenton from the mountains of PA (little town near Somerset). Looking forward to getting myself up to speed on VA laws and then get active in the RKBA scene. (NRA Lifer) If any of you cross-post onto the PAFOA forum you may recognize the screen name.

Is there a concise compare and contrast with the PA carry laws? I'm still carrying on my valid PA LTCF until I can get everything together to apply for my VA CHP.

All you need for your VA CHP is proof of competency - DD-214 (military) or other training.

Currently, you can carry anywhere except courthouses, federal buildings (Post Office included), private property which is appropriately posted and schools (K-12). You can only Open Carry in establishments that serve alcohol (on premises) - until the new Restaurant Ban Repeal goes into effect on July 1st - at which time, you will be able to carry concealed in such establishments.

I'm sure others will chime in with anything that I missed.

It is not strictly illegal to carry on private property that is posted. Bad manners yes, but not illegal. However, if the property owner/manager/representative asks you to leave you must do so or face trespassing charges. The game warden may also want to have words if that carrying is on land posted no-hunting.

Edit to add: If you check the NRA summaries at http://www.nraila.org/GunLaws/ for PA and VA that will give a good overall summary of what both states allow and disallow.

This sounds a lot like PA's regulation.

Thanks for all the welcomes. I've got all the docs printed for my VA CHP, just need to get down to the sheriff's office for my print card and then I can get it submitted. At least my DD214 has me covered for training. It looks like my wife should be fine with her VA hunter's ed card. Got my C&R license transferred so that's set now. Guess I need to wander into the hunting section and figure out the hunting regs next.

Any good gun clubs/ranges around Warrenton? Guess I'll be needing a place to shoot. I see Clark's 12 miles south of here has a range, but haven't had a chance to check it out yet.

VA Code says different. If its posted no guns and you carry then you are breaking the law unless you have specific permission from the owner that you may carry....posted means the property owner has informed you no guns allowed...

§18.2-308 (O.): Private property when prohibited by the owner of the property, or where posted as prohibited.

http://www.vsp.state.va.us/Firearms_Res ... dgunPermit

Note that the posted content on the VASP and the VA legal site are a little different but I wouldnt care to try and challenge this if you are caught carrying where its been posted otherwise...

Proshooter you should weigh in on this one...
