So I went to the Range last night

Post by Taggure »

:packin: My son, his friend and I went to the range (Sharp Shooters) last night to try out our new pistols and what a time we had. The guys at Sharp Shooters are really friendly and for a week night it was not that crowded. :first:

My son bought himself a S&W 40VE .40SW a few weeks back at the Dale City Gun show and this was the first chance that he has had to shoot it and he is absolutely in love with the gun. He was practicing his SHTF Head shots and maintained a very tight group from 7 yards out to about 15 yards. Nick was shooting Federal FMJ 165 grain .40SW out of his pistol and there was only 1 miss-feed out of 100+ rounds fired.

For myself well I wanted to try out the new little High Point C9 9mm that I bought, so after reading about all the miss-feed problems that can come with this model I had brought out 2 different types of ammo for it since I was not sure what would feed the best. I had the Winchester White box in 9mm luger and 9mm NATO
also reading about the feeding problems with this gun they talk about adjusting the amount of rounds in the clip, so I employed this strategy as well.
The magazine will hold 8 rounds but I decided that anything less then 6 as I might as well use my revolver as it defeats the purpose.
So, I decided that I would shot 50 round of 9mm luger and 50 rounds of 9mm NATO.
What I found was the 9mm Luger out of about 50 rounds I had 9 miss-feeds and all but one of those miss-feeds happened when I ran with just 6 rounds in the mag (Two miss-feeds happend on the same mag). It seemed that when I maxed it out with 8 rounds that it fired the smoothest.

In using the 9mm NATO out of the 50 rounds fired I had just 2 miss-feeds. It did not matter how I stacked the magazine. My next trip to the range will probably be the first part of next week and I will take Federal Ammo with me to see how it shoots out of this little High Point. Oh by the way This little 9mm is very accurate out to the 15 yard mark I was putting center mass shots in a nice 4-5” group on a full sized target. Yeah, I know do that at 25 yards, so okay I am working up to it Practice Practice Practice I know.

My revolver Taurus Model 82 .38 Special Performed as expected Flawlessly and had fun shooting it and I put about 50 rounds down range with it.
You Just got to love a revolver. It may not have the capacity of a double stack clip but it is as dependable as they come.

I know some of you here in NOVA go to sharpshooters and since I just got a membership for my son and I we will be there on Thursday nights as that is his night off work I now have a guest pass or 2. I thought that I heard there were a couple of folks that show up on Tuesday nights as well so I will try to stop in on Tuesdays as well.

Sounds like everyone had a great time.

RE your High Point, I know a lot of folks love to bash them, but I had a C9 for a while and really enjoyed it (sold it to fund other projects). There are a few things that can be done to improve it's feeding, like tweaking the mag lips and doing a "fluff and buff" , or polishing the feed ramp. After I did mine, she ran great. Here's a link to the High Point owners forum, lots of great and helpful folks there.

Vern,
Great stuff!

I fired Ricks S&W .40 last time at sharp shooters and I really liked it...
heavier than my glock and a bit more stable (seemingly) when pulling the trigger quiclky, could have been the big meat grabbber grips he had on his...

look forward to seeing you out at Bills M&S!
Be particular, and be vigilant, as the enemy will only attack on two occasions:
When you're ready or when you're not ready.

Also never forget, that everyone who shows up, is not necessarily there to help.
