New Member in Charlottesville

Post by fordhook2000 »

Greetings all, one more new member reporting in!

I've been "lurking" around the forum for several months now; finally figured it was time to "go active!"

About me: I'm a Charlottesville local, attending a certain institution of higher learning in that area (I won't name any names for fear of giving anyone bias ammunition in my first post! )

I've been shooting since .22s at Boy Scout camp, have since graduated a bit with the help of various inheritance and gifts. Current "arsenal" looks like:
Marlin Model 60 .22 (recently converted to a very cool synthetic stock)
Marlin 336C 30-30 -- the scope my grandfather fitted to this rifle is on a neat hinged mount for use with iron sights; never seen anything like it
Remington 700 .300 Win Mag in black synthetic, 4-12X Bushnell(?)
Smith & Wesson SW99 .40

The final entry on the list leads me to my first question for the forum! I got the SW99 as an early 21st b/d present from my parents (I'll be applying for my CHP as soon as I turn 21 in a month or two, can't wait!). I chose it because I REALLY like the Walther P99 (fit, looks, biggest point for me is actually the trigger guard magazine release--I hate having to search around for an arbitrarily placed release and have trouble activating it--not that I'm inclined to find myself in heated firefights where I'm swapping mags all the time!) and the SW99 was a good bit cheaper AND American made. Reviews or general feedback seem pretty sparse online though. Does anyone have any input on this one? Full time school schedule and limited ammo budget have kept me from shooting it as much as I'd like so far, so I haven't even formed a full performance opinion myself...

Thanks in advance for any feedback, and I look forward to "joining the clan!"

Fordhook,
Did you ever get your answer? Have you had any more time to go out and shoot it?

My two cents worth.....
I purchased a Walther P99 in .40 cal back in 2002 slightly after they first came out. I chose this gun based on a dealers recommendation at the gun show I was at. I was originally looking for an H&K .40 or a Sig P229/P226 in .40. Since the model had just come out it was right around the price of a Sig. Two years later the price had dropped more than $200 from what I paid and in my opinion for good reason.

I could never get my gun to shoot constantly. I changed the back grips, the front sight, and tried different ammo and every time I went to the range I had different results. In frustration I finally traded the gun for a old used up SW5906. The 5906 takes the same mags as my Marlin Camp 9 and I wanted a companion for it. Although I took a loss on the trade it was probably the best trade I have made yet. I had put 500 - 1000 rounds through the gun and it never shot right.

The guy I traded it to told me just the other day that he never got it to hit accurately for him either. I wouldn't ever buy another Walther (Any model, their rep with me is tarnished) and I wouldn't buy a SW P99 since they are exactly the same gun and come off the same line.
