EMP could leave '9 out of 10 Americans dead'
Analyst: 'That is exactly what Iranians are working toward'

There is renewed alarm about the possibility of an EMP attack – electromagnetic pulse – on the United States because of Iran's work on a multi-stage Space Launch Vehicle, according to a report from Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin.
And experts forecast if such an attack were a success, it effectively could throw the U.S. back into an age of agriculture.
"Within a year of that attack, nine out of 10 Americans would be dead, because we can't support a population of the present size in urban centers and the like without electricity," said Frank Gaffney, president of the Center for Security Policy. "And that is exactly what I believe the Iranians are working towards."
A recent launch of an SLV by Iran has sparked renewed concern of an attack that could send an electromagnetic pulse powerful enough to wipe out computer controls for systems on which society has come to rely, officials say.
As the G2 Bulletin reported last week, Ronald Burgess, director of the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency, revealed that Iran successfully launched a multi-stage SLV, the Simorgh. The device ultimately could be equipped with a nuclear bomb, which the U.S. intelligence community assesses Iran is developing.
Officials also report Iran has been testing detonation of its nuclear-capable missiles by remote control while still in high-altitude flight. The development makes a potential EMP attack on the U.S. more probable.

I suspect I am in greater danger driving to work tomorrow than a nationwide EMP attack by Iran.
Re: EMP could leave '9 out of 10 Americans dead'
The reason Iran wouldn't try this is lack of certainty that it would work. North Korea, on the other hand, might try it regardless of certainty that it would work.tursiops wrote:I suspect I am in greater danger driving to work tomorrow than a nationwide EMP attack by Iran.
Heinlein wrote a story about this sort of threat, called "Solution Unsatisfactory". I can't find it online but there's a recent radio play version available on MP3: http://www.sffaudio.com/?p=1436

Re: EMP could leave '9 out of 10 Americans dead'
The intersting thing about this to me is that it is obvious that we have an unusually high number of folks here at are THE 1 in 10 kind...
God forbid anything like this occur, as i am not really interested in living the dream sans electricity,
but if so, primers will still work just fine...now for you people with those pizo electric fired rifles, your gonna have an issue... and thankfully EMP has an area of effect, and to cover the USA as a entirety from a country like Iran or North kakalaky is waaaaaay more than they are ever gonna have...
besides, for Iran anyway, Isreal would be target #1...
They actaully have many options for glassing their entire country open to them...

Be particular, and be vigilant, as the enemy will only attack on two occasions:
When you're ready or when you're not ready.
Also never forget, that everyone who shows up, is not necessarily there to help.

The title had me startled a bit. I thought you were talking about my Springfield Armory Enhanced Micro-Pistol (EMP) leaving 9 out of 10 Americans dead. I thought I had finally bought the ultimate pistol!!
Re: EMP could leave '9 out of 10 Americans dead'
Interesting thing those EMPs are, one of the side effects of a nuclear blast is an EMP. Funny thing about it, anything that isn't shielded and transistorized construction, a car's brain, my computer
, modern appliances is fried. That good old vacuum tube TV would work, but the radio and station would be off the air for a while. Power plants would probably have enough concrete in them to protect the electronics but I don't know about the distribution network.
Call me crazy
but, I just don't understand why countries would focus their energy on destruction, instead of doing something stupid like, finding a way to grow enough food to feed all your citizens, improving their lives...

Gee, and then someone got smart enough to figure out how to create a huge EMP event without having to detonate a nuke...that way you could fry the country back to the stone age, then take over, and take all their food...if you were Robin Hood you could then play redistribute the wealth...grumpyMSG wrote:Interesting thing those EMPs are, one of the side effects of a nuclear blast is an EMP. Re: EMP could leave '9 out of 10 Americans dead'
EMP exists the Navy spent a lot of money testing their ships off the coast of VA a few years back. I am not too sure about the 9 out of 10 estimates. That assumes a lot of things go wrong. Essentially all the long haul power lines go down and all the transmission stations, and there are not enough spare parts to rebuild for a while. We get no help from Mexico or Canada or Europe or unaffected areas in the US. Meanwhile everyone starves due to a lack of electricity and transportation. I do not know enough of the physics to know exactly how much one warhead would do, but the US and Russians have set off bombs at high altitude to see what the effects were, and design military spec hardware to take this into account. The real drawback to a EMP weapon to the attackers is that it is real obvious who sent it and it does not reduce are ability to attack back at all. I would be much more worried about a nuke on a container ship sitting off New York City. It would take a while to figure out exactly where it came from and the retaliation would also likely be more restrained and much more complex.

Between their towable rigs and their mid-range sonar testing, I'm surprised more stuff hasn't washed ashore at 17th Street.wally626 wrote:EMP exists the Navy spent a lot of money testing their ships off the coast of VA a few years back.
I remember seeing what looked like a giant erector set on a barge being hauled in and out of Cape Henry back when I was a kid. I wonder if that had anything to do with it?
