New to forum, not in VA yet!
Greetings all! I plan on moving down to VA from NY by the end of the summer. One of the main reasons I'm escaping NY is the ridiculous nanny-state mentality, especially when it comes to firearms (Average wait time for a hunting/target pistol permit is 14 months. You heard me right, hunting/target ONLY! Concealed Carry permits are only granted to those who have had a pistol permit for years). Glad to see the VA shooting community is so tight-knight and welcoming!
I'm sure I'll be posting all sorts of questions about legalities and such once I pack up and head down -- I'm used to the insane rules and hoops we New Yorkers have to jump through!

We look forward to having you in the voting/tax base...

Oh, and careful coming down 95...you have to pass by Jersey city

Be particular, and be vigilant, as the enemy will only attack on two occasions:
When you're ready or when you're not ready.
Also never forget, that everyone who shows up, is not necessarily there to help.

I won't have the "pleasure" of traveling through Jersey City, I'm from Western NY! Even more of a reason to show Bloomberg my appreciation on the way out!

Re: New to forum, not in VA yet!
Not 100% sure on the exact location quite yet, but all the places I'm looking at are just outside of Richmond (that whole "job" thing limits where I can live). That brings me to a question which I haven't been able to find the answer to: What are the laws surrounding shooting on ones' own property?

Stay out of those covenant deals with subdivisions, and you ought to be able to let'er rip!

That's great to know, Bill! Are there any specifics in terms of distance from road/neighbors' homes I'd have to look out for? Obviously common sense would dictate what is downrange of you, I'm just concerned about behind and to the side. Last thing I want to start off with are some upset neighbors!

No, my neighbors are at least 900 yards away and don't realy care about me shooting. This is Va. and you have the right to shoot on your own property if it has a safe backstop. I do.You must remember that my driveway is just at a mile long to get to the house from the main road.

There aren't any state restrictions that I'm aware of regarding distances. You should check with the county for any ordinances in the hunting regs here: http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/hunting/re ... nances.pdfamshaffer wrote:That's great to know, Bill! For instance - here is the text of an ordinance in Hanover County:
Hanover County Ordinance wrote:It shall be unlawful to discharge or shoot any firearm or other weapon in or along any public road or street or within 100 yards thereof or within 100 yards of any building occupied or used as a dwelling or place where the public gathers, not his own dwelling or residence.

Eat your heart out Rick. When Shelly and the kid's see the place you are going to have a real hard time living in a city or even just out on the outskirts of one. LOL

Mile long in Bill's measurements. He says he catches big fish too.
