LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - You may have received a letter from the U.S. Census Bureau this week telling you the actual Census is on its way to your home, and NewsChannel 11 has learned that there could be consequences if you decide to not fill it out.

The forms should arrive to your home between March 15th and 17th. It is ten questions and should take you about ten minutes to fill out.

The City of Lubbock says the Census is important for West Texas because it determines political representation and federal funding.

"It's estimated that $400 billion a year is allocated from the census numbers, so it's very important that we get everyone counted," says Buckberry.

If you don't fill out the Census and mail it back in, a Census worker will come to your door to try to get the information from you.

If you don't fill out the Census completely, or don't send it in at all, the Government can fine you $100. If you fill it out with false information, they can fine you $500. If you give untrue information with the intent to cause an inaccurate count, they can fine you $1,000 and put you in jail for a year.

However, those working with the Census locally say this is unlikely.

"It's a crime not to complete or return your census form, but it's unrealistic that they're going to enforce it," says David Buckberry, Senior Planner with the City of Lubbock.

Some of the questions on the form include asking for your phone number, race, and if you rent or own your home. Some residents on the South Plains told NewsChannel 11 they feel it is too intrusive.

Coming up tonight on NewsChannel 11 at 10, we'll take a look at what the Constitution says about the Census and some of its surprising history.

Judge Napolitano on Fox said it was $100 PER question. He said he can't tell people to disobey the law but he will not be filling out the personal questions.

BTW, The long form is much much worse. :tinfoil:

I can't say if this is true or not, but I have always heard that you are only required to state how many people live in that dwelling. I wish I had some facts to back that up, but I don't. So take that with the appropriate grain of salt.

I heard a suggestion on the radio for answering the question about race, check other and write in "American".

The census is used to determine how to redistrict the area in which you live. Depending on which political gang is in charge at the time will determine how your specific area will be carved up. This time its the democrats , so get your vaseline ready....thats why they say elections have consequences..

I like that. American! Or maybe I'll just go for: Human

Is it possible to take the 5th on the census?

Or is 'Daytona 500' a valid answer in VA when they ask: Race?

Not in VA... However, I believe "Bristol", "Richmond" or "Martinsville" are...

rush limbaugh is the one who suggested this "american" race thing. Chances are if you live in a county that went heavily against Obama in 08, you won't even see the census envelope.

Census? You must mean that thing I received yesterday. I read an article that warned to be very wary of census scams so I immediately threw it away. I did open it though. They asked way too many questions and every other word was "Hispanic."

I'm quite sure it was a scam...

Yeah but you dont see me asking you, Jay can you please tell me:

Full name
Are you Hispanic
How many people live in your house
How many Hispanics
Birthdates
Did I mention Hispanic yet
Race
Check here if you are Hispanic
Anyone in your house live anywhere else
Please dont forget to mention if you are a Hispanic

Btw, I am not anti Hispanic, but its obvious the census guys have some kind of agenda for this item...
