Plenty of places can be used as a fallout shelter. What might be more practical to think of is where can you go to hide if need be and stay safe for a short period of time and/or perhaps more importantly where can you hide valuables.Sweetpea wrote:Thanks! Re: Survival Websites
If that doesn't work out, you could always bury an old school bus in the backyard. That and shipping containers seem to be the popular DIY shelters of choice.

Re: Survival Websites
Having something large like a big shipping container buried in your backyard is probably not a good idea unless you got a big back yard - say more than a 3 or 4 acres. Think in terms of where you can hide valuables and not necessarily yourself.

I never said that I would do that, but I know of folks that have done it for whatever reason. Since I'm in the city, bugging out might be a better option for me. Just have to get the BOV to the BOL before I'm SOL.

Understand. I'm just trying to get a message across about what might be easier and better to hide. And, you can start doing that now. My plan is to plant a nice garden this spring...in the backyard...OakRidgeStars wrote:I never said that I would do that, but I know of folks that have done it for whatever reason. Re: Survival Websites
I wonder with our proximity to D.C. are they're any homes from the 50's with a fallout shelter in the backyard?
That would ROCK!

The neighborhood I grew up in, which was built in the early '60's, had two homes with underground shelters. I can remember me and my friends playing in one of them.Reverenddel wrote:I wonder with our proximity to D.C. are they're any homes from the 50's with a fallout shelter in the backyard?

They were small, maybe about 10' x 12' or so, but it would work for a small family. At least, for a short time.

A good reminder, some of those items in your first aid kit "expire" in several years....
Here's a great place to get individual items to replace simple things you may use over the course of time, or if you want to make your own first aid kit... I have several different kits in the bug out bag, but I also keep some smaller kits for the house, car, and range trips....

Re: Survival Websites
you know, I really hate to burst other peoples' bubbles.....but in the event of a catastrophic attack on this country, anyone within the triangle between norfolk, richmond, and DC, will not survive, at least more than a couple weeks, unless you are in Utah when this triangle gets lit up....I'm not sayin that this is likely, but "if" is a very big word when its your a** on the line.....

Re: Survival Websites
I've heard about them, think we all have, but have never actually seen one. Personally though, I'd feel a little safer with one of those things under my house right now...not that I think a bomb will be going off anytime soon but that would make a nice spider hole when the zombies come - and they will...

Northwest Shelter Systems build the best around, assuming you have the funds. They even provide NBC filtering systems to prevent contaminated air from reaching your shelter. It sure beats burying an old school bus behind the house.

Wow. Whoda thunk there is a still a company actually advertising they build nuclear proof bomb shelters...
Not that its still not a threat of sorts. If I had boat loads of money I might opt for one in the sticks where no body knew...
