Yankee and Rebel

Post by burns »

Hi folks,

I was born in Cincinnati, about 5 miles from Kentucky, and growing up I lived in a small town outside Cincy, and I spent a lot of time in Kentucky. My dad's family lived in the north (Cincinnati) for 2 generations, and before that they were in Kentucky. My mom's family was in Cincinnati for a couple generations, before that they were mostly from Germany.

I've lived in Ohio, Indiana, Spain, Delaware, Maryland and now Virginia.

I respect the south. I would be happy to live in most southern states. I've had southerners call me "yankee" (no offense taken), including friends from Florida. As a side note, I find it odd when guys from large cities in Florida who have little or no accent call me "Yankee". According to their mannerisms, accent and political ideology, they may as well have been born in Maryland.

That's the background, now here are the questions:

1. Do those of you who were born in, and live in NOVA consider yourselves one or the other (yankee / rebel). If so, why so?

2. If my kids are born and raised in Northern Virginia, which will they be?

Not something I take seriously; I just have been hearing the word "Yankee" more since I moved here so I'm curious. My wife and I want kids, so that got me thinking (will they be yankees too, ha!).

As Cincinnati Reds fan, I hated the word "Yankee" from an early age.

1. Yes, I consider my self a Rebel/Redneck ... an educated and respectful gentleman of the south, with all that it entails...

2. Yes, most definetly your offspring, if born in Ole Virginia, will be Rebels at the least, and Rednecks if your lucky...

Carry on!

It's all good...it sounds like you have the proper attitude to be assimilated! We forgive you for bein' born up North - you got here as soon as you could!

Welcome to the South, y'all! :welcome:

Thanks for the welcome, y'all!

My attitude is such that I honestly hope newcomers to the state, like myself, don't detract from the heritage of Virginia. I know the political demographics are changing, particularly in NOVA. I hope that of the new residents, there enough good folks to make up for those who wish to turn Virginia into another Maryland (I left for good reasons). I hate having to even drive through Maryland anymore; even just buying gas there bugs me a bit because I'm supporting their nanny state via sales tax. I'm so glad we moved.

Perhaps my firstborn will now require two first names. Maybe Joe Bob?

Hey Michael, I was born in FL, moved to southern AL when I was 5. Moved from there to Connersville (Connertucky) IN when I was 12. I consider myself to be a southern born redneck rebel. I was inducted in Cincy and left there when I was 17 to join the Army. Connersville is about an hour northwest of there...
No more catchy slogans for me...I am simply fed up...4...four...4...2+2...

To answer your second question, if your kids are born in Virginia they will still be yankees. We have a saying here........... Just because the cat had kittens in the oven, we don't call them biscuits. :hysterical: :hysterical:

Welcome to Virginia  I hope you realize I was just joking about the kittens.

In my opinion (and yes, I know what opinions are like...and I have one of those too), being a Yankee or a Confederate (I prefer that to "Rebel", although that fits too) is more a state of mind than a geographical place of birth. I was born in the Peoples Republic of Illinois (SOUTHERN Illinois!) but had always considered myself to be a Southerner at heart, and finally in 1984 I had the opportunity to transfer to Tennessee....then in 1988 I transferred to Southern Virginia. At last my butt was where my heart had always been! I have NEVER considered myself to be a "yankee". My brother is, and he is still in Illinois, but I have NEVER been one!

I like to think I have a uniquely Virginia accent and have had similar experiences when traveling.. Anybody north of the Potomac considers me a southern (enter expletive). When I go farther south than say Raleigh, they say I'm a Northern (enter expletive).

It's a burden we carry.

To answer the original question, we are neither Yankee nor Rebel. We are better then both.

We are Virginians! Home of the best in the country and we'll kick your ass. Sic Semper Tyrannis

Quick question that I feel is appropriate to this thread... How do yall feel about people from states such as North Carolina call you a yankee because you live in VA (mainly people that live around Richmond like me or Northern Va)

I used to have a site at a campground on lake Gaston which is right on the line of NC and Va and more then once I was called a Yankee since im from the Richmond area and don't have a strong southern accent. My replie to them was always.... Where was the capital to the Confederacy??? and when they didn't know I would of course replie Richmond Va!!!!

To be a Virginian
either by Birth,
Marriage, Adoption,
or even on
one's Mother's side
is an Introduction to
any State in the Union,
a Passport to
any Foreign Country,
and a Benediction from Above

.........Anonymous
(William Faulkner?)

Let that be your guide. If you are "adopted" by the locals as a "Virginian", then you're one of the brood. :welcome:

Being born in Georgia and raised in North Carolina I can tell you 2 things for sure...
1.Florida,no matter where it is is not considered southern by anyone
2.Virginia at least by most people i know is not considered part of the south either..
being southern is as much a state of mind as it is a location,it is a way of life,a slow deliberate laid back way of living

Florida...ok. I can understand why folks would see it that way.

Virginia...do they not have history class in the real south?

ok guys,
I will concede that there are parts of Virginia that are southern,I think places to the west of me, in and towards the mountains are a lot more southern than say Fredericksburg or nova..but like i said before I think it is more a state of mind than a location..just don't tell any of my Georgia kin I said that
