Removing brass does not sound right. The inside of that die should be close to mirror smooth. If it's rough at the taper (crimp) section, that may be your problem.

I'm not sure which die set you have but they should have come with instructions as to how to use them and what they will do. I know RCBS has two crimp die types, taper and roll. What Lee/Lyman/Redding has I do not know. For 45ACP you want a taper die. The 45ACP headspaces on the case mouth. The length of the case needs to be consistent and the "crimp" should be just enough to remove the flare/bell from the case, not and actual crimp. Neck tension will keep the bullet in place. Too, you should bell the case mouth just enough to start the bullet without catching the case mouth. You don't need to create a severe funnel.
