180 grain 9mm hollowpoints

Post by PhylumofDoom »

I recently acquired some 180 grain 9mm hollowpoint rounds from my brother-in-law who is a combat engineer in the army. He packed these his-self and said these are what he carried during his first tour of Iraq and fired 4000 without any problem. I know you cant buy these so has anybody heard or know anything about using these? Or have a thought or opinion?

180?! SMGs use 147g.
If you're going that heavy, why not just step up to .40 or .45?
What advantage does a 180g 9mm have over a 124g or other common 9mm?

I have never heard of a 180 grain projectile for 9 M.M. loading. It seems to me that you could not push a 180 gr. slug fast enough to properly open up. The 9 M.M. would not have the case capacity for the powder charge that it would need. These rounds being carried in Iraq would put your Brother in Law in jail if he was to use them as a violation of the Genive Convention (Hollow Point Ammo )

It is also a problem for none adjustable sighted weapons as a slug this heavy will leave the barrel at the top of a recoil roll and therfore shoot high.

Just my opinion

You mean he reloaded them? I wouldn't shoot someone else's reloads in my guns, period. Especially ones of questionable ballistics! When you decrease case volume due to deep seating or longer bullets, pressures go through the roof. Sounds like a KB waiting to happen. I agree with Sgt. Bill... sumpin cockeyed somewheres.
Now is the time for all good men to get off their rusty dustys...
