Anyone varmint hunt with a stock AR Carbine?
Anyone varmint hunt with a stock AR Carbine?
Just got my first AR and want to do a little more than shoot paper. I have a 16inch stock barrel and want to know about thoughts on accurate ammo and prospects of using this gun for hunting.
Re: Anyone varmint hunt with a stock AR Carbine?
Nothing wrong with a stock ar for hunting, I used mine a few times. As far as ammo goes do not use fmj or match ammo for hunting. The fmj bullets will just punch a small hole through an animal causing a slow death. The match ammo won't expand properly causing the same thing, slow death and lost animal. Find out what rate of twist the barrel has and then you can find out the better bullet weight for your gun.

Thanks VaHunter,
I have a 1 in 9 twist barrel. What ammo would you recommend?

I think some counties have minimum caliber requirements which might be a problem if your's is a.223, although the intent may be to weed out .22 rimfires.gungoboom wrote:Just got my first AR and want to do a little more than shoot paper. Statewide requirement is that for deer, and I suppose bear, it must be a minimum .23 caliber (exact wording might be "larger than .23 caliber"). Counties can make their own rules concerning hunting to an extent, most of the rules either ban the use of rifles or limit where/how they can be used. I am not aware of any county that requires something larger than the satatewide minimum for deer and all allow the use of .22 rimfire or larger for varmints if they allow rifles to be used within the county. Using a .223 for varmints is not a problem.gfost1 wrote:I think some counties have minimum caliber requirements which might be a problem if your's is a.223, although the intent may be to weed out .22 rimfires.gungoboom wrote:Just got my first AR and want to do a little more than shoot paper.
