1911 troubles

Does any one know of a really good gunsmith in the Hampton Roads area (real savy with 1911's) I was refered to one and he seemed to know what he was talking about but said he had a 14 month back log of work.(?) About a year ago I bought a Metro Arms Corp. American Classic II 1911 45 and I have to keep the very tip of my finger at top part of the trigger in order to get it to fire. if I put my finger in the middle or near the bottom part of the trigger the hammer stops at the halfcock point with a very loud click. its a real pain in the neck and I'm worried that its just going to get worse. so if you know of someone or maybe know of something I can do with it please share it with me thanks.

Based on what you're saying I wouldnt let it get worse by not using it. Trouble on the trigger like that means its virtually useless for self defense and more important if the trigger decides to go while youre gripping it could discharge without you wanting it to. Not good either way you look at it. Or it could end up unfirable no matter how you try to squeeze the trigger.

Have you tried contacting Metro Arms to see if they have a known issue with that model? They may be able to fix it or tell you what needs to be done..Sounds like a clearance issue with the trigger at the top and possibly a simple filing will set it right.....

where are you at? close to gloucester? I know a couple brothers, they do some gun smithing in gloucester. One was a marine sniper, one army, both vietnam multiple tours . They did some work on my norinko 9mm, and it seems to be working much better.

Post your problem on here, http://forums.1911forum.com/index.php most 1911's are pretty user friendly may be a simple fix you can do yourself. The folks on that board seem to be fairly helpful.

Please do not put a FILE to anything inside the weapon. If you don't know how to work on a 1911 with a India Hard Stone then leave it alone or suffer the cost of replacement parts.

Does the weapon have an overtravel adjustment? If so remove the screw from the trigger with an allen wrench... add some blue loctite to it... screw it in a LITTLE at a time till the weapon will not discharge then back out the screw about a half or three quarters of a turn.

One of the gun shops or gun ranges used to have a gunsmith night on Tuesdays in either Norfolk or VA Beach. I think it was either Superior Pawn and Gunshop in VA Beach or Bob's in Norfolk. You could just drop in and they would look at it and fix it on the spot if they could. Give them a call and see which one it was and if they still do that. And good luck!
