Hopkins Gun and Tackle- Heard a rumor.
Someone told me that HG&T was closing at the first of the year, can someone confirm, deny, or speculate?

Oh no. One closing stinks. Two is a sign. If a third drops, that's a serious warning.

Yeah, This explains why GT is so packed with the same items, but not much of a variety anymore. They didn't even have the Ruger American in 22 magnum. (shrugs) They have eleventy billion 1911 variations, but 22 magnums don't move as well I suppose.
Anyway. CSA, Blue Ridge Arsenal and that scary place on Midlo will at least keep going because people need a place to shoot!

The reality is for 16 of the last 25 years we had democratic presidents and congresses that threatened major gun control agendas. Over that time a generation or more, packed their basements full of guns, and ammo, and at this point, there simply is very little demand left.
As Obama came into office, many spent like it was the end of days. And things were priced at crazy levels. Now I can buy ammo at prices lower than I've seen in the last 10-20 years. .22 rimfire under .05/round. Cases of 1000 9mm at less than $170. When you adjust for the buying power of a dollar, the current prices are about 65% of what they were in 2008, and feeling a lot more like 1998 price levels.
The coming reality is that if a shop makes all its money via guns and ammo, they are in deep trouble. If you have a large sporting goods store that sells hiking, camping, and other outdoors gear, they can afford to have that part of the store cary a slowdown in the gun department. The small town hardware store with a FFL that does 80% transfers, yep, they're probably going to survive the lean times.
We are going to see a lot of consolidation in the local dealer market. This is just the start of the changes/consolidation coming in the gun biz.

Too bad they cannot consolidate with a 4x4 shop, a strip club, and a casino...
(blinks) I would probably never leave... and be broke... but... entertained.

I'm in there every couple of weeks and haven't seen or heard anything to support this claim.
Every time I'm in there there seems to be at least one or two folks buying guns.
But guns and accessories aside they do A LOT of fishing equipment business.
It'll be ashamed if they do close. I've certainly done my part in the firearms department to keep them up and running.
