Finally got a .22

Post by Jon »

Out of all the guns I have a proper 22 rifle was not one of them, I know shame on me.

I prefer the older bolts when it comes to these and had been looking for a while. Today I came across this Marlin 80DL and ended up grabbing it for next to nothing.

It's missing some parts but seems to be in great shape overall and I think will make for a nice little project and shooter once everything's there.

From my research I estimate this to be one of the earlier models, '40 something. No serial number.

I'm on the parts hunt currently but her she is...

I've got a couple old Winchester .22's, both bolt actions. One is a single shot. Really about all you need to learn to shoot safely and accurately. Great for a hunter, whether beginner or experienced.

I've told several people over the years they should get their young one(s) an older bolt action .22 as a first gun. Most of them just gave me a funny look and bought something else. They're loss.

Was it hard to find parts for? That is one thing about buying an older gun, finding any parts it might need, now or in the future.

M1A4ME, the only parts it really needed were the rear peep sight assembly, and possibly a ejector spring.

Originally I wanted the factory peep sight set up but it's just too pricey so I ordered a Williams made for this model. Not as classy but only $40.

I also got a factory metal trigger guard on the way to replace the plastic one that somehow ended up on it.

Numrich is the go to for most parts on any older gun like this.

Couple of pics with the Williams sight that came in today.

Had to do a little woodworking on the stock to get it to fit. Doesn't look horrible IMO and it seems to be functional.

Shot six shots before dark standing from 40yds. Couple of fliers but the other four are a 1.5" group.

I like a good .22. They make for a very utilitarian rifle.

They are great for training the kids, dispatching pests, and light hunting. If you had to, you could take down a deer with one. And, if you had to, you could defend the homefront with one.

A .22 rifle is on my personal list of "must have" firearms, and I usually suggest them as a 1st rifle.

I like that sight; it's visually interesting.

Ruger 10/22, from a bench at 50 yds with front bean bag rest. First three in the 10 ring. Adjusted, then three in the bull. The larger holes above are my Savage model 110 bolt 270 from 100 yards. Got that adjusted as well. Hit a quarter lb can of tannerite with a pumpkin on top from about 200 feet first try.

Anyone tried the new canned explosive Rural King sells? Cheaper than Tannerite, but not by much.
