Your Internet-connected lightbulb manufacturer is just concerned with the light turning on and off when you tap on the app button from your phone. They're not concerned about who else could have control of your lights.

After working with this stuff all day, I can't get to an off-grid homestead fast enough. Technology was supposed to be a convenience; instead it will be the means of our modern-day enslavement.

Been working on just that for the past several years, and thankfully we are at a point where we could jump in an older vehicle, load up a few extra supplies, and go. Fully self sufficient, good availability of game, water, and completely off grid power.

AS a couple of others have stated don't install that "app" until you know everything it does, and does not do. Think back about all those "Flash light" apps that "needed" access to the GPS, address book, phone, etc.

The Facebook app harvests data as you use your phone... and based on installing the app and watching traffic on a NEW phone with nothing but Facebook and Dev kit, it listens to audio.

Ditto Amazon Echo - but at least they are explicit about it.
