Seems like there's a guy on arfcom that posts threads about the old axes and hatchets he buys at yard sales and flee markets and even off ebay. H fixes them up, puts new handles in them, etc. and the splits some wood with them.

Some of them are really interesting. You think of "axe" and don't begin to cover all the different sizes, shapes, purposes they were made for. Same with hatchets. At home I remember hatchest that were just for splitting kindling. One had a hammer on the back end for pounding nails into wood with a small notch between the blade and handle for pulling nails out. Another one with a "claw" like a claw hammer on the bottom of the back end for pulling nails out and I guess you'd use the flat area above to pound the nails in.

I've got the axe that George Washington used to cut down the cherry tree. Been in my family for years, for some reason. It's a well used tool, so it's hardly in new condition. Over the years, the head has been replaced a couple of times, and the handle has been replaced at least twice in my lifetime. Still sees a lot of use, though.

I almost bought a Fiskars, but that one looked too "generic" or "industrial". So I chose this one, because It has a style, looks stronger, got great ratings/reviews and was in the same price range.
