13-year-old with BB gun shot dead by police in Ohio

Post by wittmeba »

The fatal police shooting late Wednesday of a black 13-year-old boy — who officers say was carrying a BB gun “practically identical” to a real weapon — added a new layer to the country’s painful ongoing debate about race, policing and gun violence.

Police said a man reported being robbed by three men, one of whom had a gun. In the recorded 911 call, he says that they took $10, and that he wasn’t going to make a big deal about it, but other witnesses called to report what happened.

Three people nearby matched the description the victim gave, police said. Officers chased two of them, including eighth-grader Tyre King, into an alley, officials said. Tyre pulled the BB gun from his waistband, police said, and officer Bryan Mason opened fire, hitting the boy several times.

A second person was detained without injury and later released, police said, and a third person got away. Tyre died at Nationwide Children's Hospital about half an hour later. (Police had earlier given the spelling of the teen’s name as Tyree.)

Tyre is black; Mason is white. The case comes at a time of increased tensions over the fatal shootings of black people by white officers, and it has garnered comparisons to the 2014 police shooting of Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old boy shot dead while playing with a toy pellet gun in a Cleveland park. Tamir’s death was among those that helped propel the Black Lives Matter movement to national prominence.

City officials said in a news conference that they disagreed with the comparison.

Tyre, a student at Linden-McKinley STEM Academy, was the second-youngest person that police have shot and killed in 2016, according to a Washington Post database of police shootings. The youngest was Ciara Meyer, 12, who was accidentally hit with a bullet during a January eviction in Pennsylvania.

Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther appeared to choke up Thursday as he called for the community to come together to help ensure children remain safe. He questioned why a teen would have what he described as a replica of a police firearm.

"There is something wrong in this country, and it is bringing its epidemic to our city streets," Ginther said. "And a 13-year-old is dead in the city of Columbus because of our obsession with guns and violence.”

"You have to feel for the family in this and you also have to think about what the officer's going through," said Sgt. Rich Weiner, a Columbus police spokesman. "There's no winners here."

Police were on the defense that morning, sharing a photo of a similar BB gun at a press conference to show that, as Columbus Police Chief Kim Jacobs said, Tyre’s gun was “practically identical” to the weapons police use. The photo was later tweeted from the Columbus police account.

BB or replica guns can be very similar in appearance to real guns. “In theory, toy guns are supposed to have an orange tip on them or a laser sight so people know the difference,” said Peter Moskos, a former Baltimore police officer and associate professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, “but often they come without the tip or you just are unable to tell the difference in the heat of the moment.”

Officers were not wearing body cameras at the time of the incident. The city began testing body cameras last month among a group of 30 officers, and officials have said they want to have the camera program fully running by 2017. It’s unclear if there is any bystander cellphone footage, and police said they were looking into possible surveillance video.

The case is being reviewed internally, standard procedure for Columbus police. Jacobs said investigators will share their review with a prosecutor and grand jury, who will determine if there should be criminal charges against the officer. Mason, who has been involved in several fatal shootings during his nine years on the force, is currently on administrative leave.

Through an attorney, Tyre’s family released a statement Thursday calling for an independent investigation, and saying that “numerous witness accounts” contradict the police version of their son’s death.

Tyre “was a child who was loved and cherished by his family,” an attorney for the family, Chanda Brown, said in a statement. “The grief is worsened further by the fact that this death comes at the hands of a man who was sworn to protect the citizens of Columbus.”

The family described Tyre as a “typical” teen who loved football, soccer, hockey and gymnastics.

I was just reading about this on Vdare, where this incident, or rather the reporting of this incident, was compared to the reporting of a stabbing:

Pro-tip: don't wave objects that resemble firearms around in front of police, and your chances of receiving bullet wounds will be greatly reduced.

I find it very difficult to muster up any sympathy for the kid.

On top of all the previous comments, a person has to be 18 to purchase a "BB, Pellet, or Replica" gun. So did the parents give it to him? And like SHMIV said, who does one expect when waving anything that even remotely looks like an actual gun at an officer after being cornered? What the heck has happened to teaching kids how to responsible handle any type of gun? At least my 4-H kids know better.

You would think that people would have figured this out by now.

I suspect that's partially a result of 3 insidious influences:

(1) An absence of elder male positive influences re firearms. I grew up in a culture where guns were commonly carried and used for all kinds of hunting. Young boys were "brought along" as young as 7 or 8 (for some kinds of game - like dove, for instance), and firearms safety and was drummed into our heads from day one. To break those rules was absolutely unthinkable. A far, far cry from what kids are exposed to these days in the various entertainment media. So they fail to perceive the danger they are placing themselves in.
(2) Exposure to computer games featuring gratuitous gun violence and the virtually-endowed capability of either being bullet-proof or instantly reincarnated when they are (virtually) killed. Ridiculous as it ought to be, they have been conditioned by years of watching the sundered brains and guts crawl back into their avatars; which then arise from the dead and fight another day. So even if it occurs to them there may be danger, they may not process it as "playing for keepsies".
(3) The gang culture in most american cities that corrupts young poor men of all races.

That first part of the first point is key; a lack of a positive father figure.

I've known plenty of folks who grew up without guns, but still had a father. Well, both parents, actually. The thought of waving toy guns, bb guns, real guns, at officers just wouldn't have occurred to them as a recommendable course of action.

Even with my own upbringing, while I had a few lessons from my father in regard to gun safety, it wasn't like shooting was a frequent activity.

What was FAR more common, was lessons in general civility. Both of my parents were involved in raising me to be civil. They taught me how to speak, write, dress, and behave in a civil manner. Safety rules aside, threatening anyone with a firearm, real or not, is just plain uncivilized.

This kid is a victim of neglectful parental figures, if he's a victim at all.

If BLM wants to stop seeing black kids shot by white cops, maybe they should stop making a scene, and start raising their f*****g children. Or stop making them.

I wouldn't downplay the potential for maiming by BB guns. That it was a BB gun is no less relevant than if it was a knife.

I don't yet have a 13 year old, but I have an 11 year old. He has pellet guns. Where are they? In my gun safe. We take them out when we go target shooting. He doesn't carry them around the neighborhood.

Some insist on saying," I love you" every time they speak to a child. Some prove they love the child. Glad to see proper priorities.

I carried my bb/pellet guns around the neighborhood. Of course, that was a different place and a different time. Though, I was never questioned about them. Both of the local police officers knew exactly who I was, and exactly where I lived. Come to think of it, it was pretty normal to see teenaged boys walking around the area with actual rifles. Amazing, the difference 25 years can make.

Same here man...!! I carried my bb gun around at 12-13yrs old. Never had an issue. When I was in High School, I carried my shotgun in my truck. Again, was never a problem. Wasn't out of the ordinary either. Lots of teenage boys carried rifles/shotguns in their trucks. Wasn't out of the ordinary to go hunting after school directly from the school itself. I can remember being pulled over as a teenager, & having them check to make sure my shotgun was unloaded but, other than that wasn't an issue. I had multiple shells in the cab as well.

Fast forward to today....lol. My son didn't want to drive my truck to school one day when offered because of all the shells/casings, etc.. in it. He said he could be expelled, & or charged with a crime just for having a round on school property :bangin:

A great many black kids have to scream their heads off to get their lazy mothers to get up off of their asses and do ANYTHING for the kid. So of course such kids hang around retarded gangbangers, who "teach" the kids to do retarded things.

you weren't stupid enough to point your BB gun at cops, while these kids today ARE that stupid. also, cops didn't even used to draw their .38, (with no body armor, either!) for stuff that today calls out the SWAT teams, cause they're a punch of wussies unfit to be in uniform.
