How much is too much? How little is too little?

Did an ammo inventory, one person thought I had a ridiculous amount, another thought I had too little?

Carol and I did a partial ammo inventory Saturday on 9mm , 40cal and .22lr. , the ammo we shoot the most. Even though we have been shooting quite a bit of these all summer , and buying some each week , we have maintained a very nice stash of each. Carol has been buying .22LR in the Remington 1400 rd. "Bucket of Bullets" at Walmart in Williamsburg almost every week. I have a shooting buddy that claims he keeps 500K rds. of .22LR and 300K rds. of 9mm and .45auto on hand at all times. Since that is all he shoots ( other than 12 ga. Buck Shot ) it seems like a very nice inventory to keep. He doesn't have a wife shooting up 4 -500 rds. most weekends. In today's World ......Who knows when enough is enough ? To me Ammo is like Beer and Ice Cream....You can never have enough !

I ain't keeping THAT many rounds! Honestly, I ain't an army, and 98% of the calibers I own, are easily found in lil' shops in small towns (Rule 1. No wildcats)

Hey Rev , Are you shooting .32 S&W ....I have never shot it . My business partner found a Colt .32 Revolver that belonged to his father in law when he remodeled his kitchen last winter ...He hasn't shot it yet , I have been wanting to shoot it ,but can't get him to my range . I think it is a Colt Defender ....It looks like it has never been shot... It is very nice ....I would love to own it !

I have a couple of old Iver Johnson revolvers that shoot .32 long. Have done a bit of reading about them and am told that I should avoid using .32 S&W at all costs! Found a guy who will manufacture .32 long casings out of some other caliber (forget now). Never followed up on it. Last owner shot .32 shorts and fouled the cylinders.

The Colt I was referring to is a Colt Detective Special 6 shot revolver in .32 Long. I'm not really familiar with anything in .32 .....didn't know there was a long or short or .32 s&w. I did have a .32 short semi auto pistol some years back that I got in some trading deal. I really don't have a need for a .32 , but the Colt Revolver is really nice. I was going through some ammo late today that I haven't seen in a while...found some .270 Winchester and some .243 Winchester and Federal . I don't even know where they came from. I also found some .204 Ruger.....must have been a gift....I never have bought any. Carol has been buying 45/70 because a friend brings his Henry 45/70 over every couple of months. We don't have anything in 45/70 yet , when she hoards up a thousand rds. I may have to get one.

So... I'll tell you my opinion. First, you can't really have "too much" unless you have something wildly unrealistic for an individual... like 17 million rounds (for example). However, if you have 10's or even 100's of thousands, if stuff goes south, its a commodity. If stuff doesn't go south, you have plenty of practice rounds.

Now, I do think there is such a thing as too little, like none, for instance. That is obviously bad.

I have what I refer to as a minimum ammunition inventory of every firearm I have. Here is what I use to determine the minimums...

1.) What is the total combined mag capacity of each type of weapon I own?

2.) How many total loaded mags can I realistically carry while Oscar Mike (considering other things I may need to carry. Food/water/med/etc.)?

3.) How much is realistic to be able to toss in a vehicle and transport in very short notice for bug-out?

4.) How many other people may I have to supply ammo to if things go south?

Of course I am prepared for a crisis and that is just a sample anyway. A bit more goes into it... but this might be a good starting point to get you thinking for whatever it is you want to managed your ammo supply.

I've got Iver Johnson revolvers chambered for .32 S&W... doesn't go "pow", it goes "pop"... I inherited it from my Aunt.

Got curious and pulled out the two IJ's. Both are chambered for .32 shorts, not longs. And one is hammerless and painted black. Had forgotten about that.

Also have a Colt Pocket Positive. Says on the barrel "32 COLT CTG." Been told that means .32 Long Colt. Also told to avoid putting .32 S&W through this one as well. Apparently the S&W case is just a touch smaller in diameter and could rupture. Not sure, but I think this one was used by my great uncle when he was a cop in Newark, NJ.

This. If your plan is to bug out if things go south, leaving behind a mountain of ammo that won't fit in the vehicle isn't going to help anyone except for the next person. If your plan is to hunker down and you only have a few magazines filled, it ain't enough.

If you are getting overrun in the city or burbs, that's not an option. You guys are doing it right though.

That's the way I see it, too. Too old and crippled up to run, so I need to be prepared to look after myself in situ. And I'm in a small town in a rural area. Around here folks are much more self-reliant and still have life (i.e., survival) skills that urban dwellers have long forgotten. There are resources to exploit in these hills and small communities that city folks only have access to if someone else trucks it in. So my situation won't be completely untenable. There will certainly be some predators emerging, but many will be able to shift for themselves. Now, if I just had a good middlin'-sized moonshine still, there would be NOTHING I couldn't barter for if the SHTF.

My biggest fear is being overrun. When we got our house, there was nothing out here, but it came up around us about a decade after we moved in. We have flowing water and wildlife, but I don't see staying in my home if there is "no end in sight" due to the pending zombie infestation.

Dang Dorm, You got me thinking about a MS Still. I never really thought about having one but, I do see that having one when TSHTF could have it's advantages ! I guess if I had a Still , I would never leave home.
