Disrespect in the first!

Post by wittmeba »

I feel it is very commendable of Michael Phelps for his accomplishments, but this kinda set me off -- Not Michael's fault.

The Panthers/Ravens game was delayed by the players so they and the spectators could watch him win the 200m competition.

Here the Dallas Cowboys asked permission to honor the police of Texas and were denied. Something wrong with this picture.

They should have done it anyway. As I have said "It is easier to ask forgiveness than beg approval".

I support Blue!

Sounds like a big nothing burger to me. The difference is that one scenario the players had some control of what could happen and in the other scenario the players did not have control of what could happen. There is a lot of money on the line to make sure uniforms look, well, uniform.

Before you know it everyone's uniform is going to look like NASCAR racing suits. I'm sure everyone will love it when players from their favorite team put Hillary stickers on their helmet.

So, they didn't open the box with Pink?

I loved the related story on the bottom of the page about the boy who shut down his Hiligula-loving teacher when she asked him a snarky question about it.

The difference here is that Pink was a league-wide mandate whereas this was an individual team's request. I think the No Fun League is open to supporting whatever causes it chooses to league-wide, for better or for worse, but doesn't want individual teams doing their own thing.

1. This example has nothing to do with the team modifying their uniform, which has been my point all along.

2. Like in the original post with Baltimore, this is another example of something the NFL has no direct control over. And this example is especially weak as it was only five players out of a roster of about 50.

Show me an example of an individual team modifying their uniform to include some sticker or ribbon or whatever and the NFL not doing anything about it and you'll finally have a legitimate apples-to-apples argument.

This decision by the NFL had EVERYTHING to do with not offending the liberal crowd. They spend a lot of money on football too....

In fairness, IF the NFL allowed the Cowboys to wear the sticker, you'd have other groups wanting to have helmet stickers & such. THEN you'd have some serious backlash, etc.... against the NFL. How many would be upset if a team wanted to put a small BLM sticker on their helmets..? & so on....

The NFL is wise in my opinion to not allow ANY political signage, decals, etc.... even stuff that leans political. Even though, they allowed Costas to go on his anti-gun rant awhile back... puke.

I personally, thought the decals honoring the fallen officers in Dallas was awesome. Jerry should've had em come out wearing em, & then dealt with the repercussions. For the record.... I AM a life long Cowboys fan :)

I couldn't find any mention of fines for NY Giants, Jets, or NE Patriots for uniform mention of Newtown, Ct.

Nor Denver's ribbon decal for Aurora shooting.

BTW, political statements while in uniform carry the effect of endorsement by the uniform owner the same as a decal, sticker, or ribbon.

Now you've got something. In looking I also saw Buffalo's sticker for the fallen firefighters that got ambushed in NY.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap100000 ... lmet-decal

Mentioned on the NFL's own website no less. Seems like all of these stories have a 2012-2013 timeline and nothing more recent. Looks like someone made a rule change after that in an effort to put the genie back in the bottle. While they may have succeeded in doing so, the precedent they already set will make them look bad each time going forward when something like this happens.

As others have mentioned, it is all about it being the uniform. Thr NFL is very strict on uniforms and uniformity. They will heavily fine individuals and teams that don't follow. If it is NFL mandated (pink), you must do it. If it isn't NFL initiated, you will be fined. The Cowboys should have done it anyway. If the NFL fined them, the owner could have paid it.

While I have to concede to the statements above, rules posted regarding uniforms I was glad to find this:
