Are they crazy?!?!?! I see cougars in my neighborhood at least twice a year. Sometimes more. Twice in the last 18 years they have been in my yard. All but once, I saw them at night.

The two in my yard...

My dog was freaking out and whining at the back door. I turned the light on to see what was out there. I actually scared off a cougar that was about to attack a deer in my backyard. It was feet away from a doe and ready to pounce. I yelled and scared off the deer. The cougar just shot me a dirty look because I spoiled dinner, and then slowly walked away. I didn't feel like cleaning up a mess or having the cat think dinner at my house was a good thing.

The next time, it was night, I just go home from work and there was about 6 inches of snow on the ground. Lindsay asked me to go to the market to get some stuff for the house. About 20 minutes after I parked, I headed back out to my car and a cougar was sleeping on the hood of my car. I guess it was trying to get warm, but the little bugger caused $2,500 in damage to my car. I was pretty PO'ed.

I never really said anything to anyone because I used to see cougars in RI all the time and in FL once in awhile. I thought they were everywhere and a normal occurrence to see one.

We have a different sort of cougar around these parts. They're every bit as dangerous as the four-legged variety.

It used to be a "Shoot and Shovel" premise with the game wardens many moons ago in the back mountains with people who owned livestock.

If you shot it, and buried it, it didn't exist.

It was explained to me by an old game warden. "If we have to spend money on an species that produces no revenue, that takes away from the revenue producing species habitat, and cuts into the budget... And that won't do."

Then he winked, and laughed, and said "Why do you think game wardens, scientist, and the department of the interior deny the existence of bigfoot? Non... Revenue... Species." :hysterical:

They call them "panthers" back at my Pop's home town in Lee County, and they are still prowling around up there...

I am surrounded by woods with fresh flowing natural water behind my home. I have been baiting animals in my yard for 18 years. I figure if we ever have a real SHTF situation and I am not able to travel or get to the point where IDGAF and decide I'm not getting chased off my land, I have plenty of food and water resources right here.

That said, the baiting works great. In my yard, over the years, I have seen in order of frequency:

deer
fox
coyote
rabbit
raccoon
groundhogs
chipmunks
turkey
bear
cougar

I think that's it. Anyway... no shortage of food supply. And the bait location is right outside my basement walk-out. I can slide the glass door open, sit in my recliner and wait. With nothing but a little bit of time, like less than 24 hours, I'll be eating like a champ.

Yep. Old-timers pronounce it PAINT'R".

Also call a grouse a "partridge", and pronounce it "PATHridge".

Got this pic on a trail camera behind my house. This was April 25th At 1:30am. Granted, I live in the boonies, and have all kinds of wildlife at my place but, this was the first pic of a big kitty I've taken.

Yeah, I was pretty shocked when I saw the pic. He's HUGE...! I've seen some bobcats around, & heard em multiple times. However, the ones I've seen with my own eyes, were all much smaller than this beast!

Unless someone knows nothing about wild cats, it's pretty hard to misidentify a bobcat as a cougar. They look completely different as far as build, colors, even over-all size and weight. It makes sense that it was lost in translation. Especially when it involves our mom's and their kids. LOL

I was told a couple days ago that a neighbor's dog was killed by several Coyotes last week. I see Coyotes and Bobcats quite often around my property. I am always armed ! I have killed several Coyotes but , haven't had a shot at a Bobcat as of yet . My neighbor's always claim they see these animals in large packs . I see them usually one at a time . They also have told me Bears are also seen from time to time....but not by me ! No reports of Cougars ...2 or 4 legged ....I wouldn't mind bagging a 4 legged Cat even though most of the 2 legged variety have very nice "pelts " but are very hard to skin out !!!
